ya know, i haven't had the pleasure of tearing my engine apart yet, what are all those washers for? they don't look like the tensioner washers (and i can't imagine buffing those....)

Nice work Kurt. Very impressive indeed. I fully expect to see you at the front of the pack with other sc'ed lunatics on the drive down yes?
Looking forward to seeing the grin I saw on your face last year when we drove Andrew's special route... but more pronounced.
and several more school girl giggles.
I can't wait either dude! See ya in a few weeks.
My grin will be there too.

Actually, these 10 washers (or should I say caps) are used to hold the intake onto the block. I know; they probably won’t be visible, but I was trying to perfect my technique before hitting the ones up top that actually show.
I can’t wait to have this done and drive it down to SITM. It’s like a Mecca for me. Every year I pick a project, then work my nuts off at the last minute trying to get it done in time go.
By far the most fun I ever had in a vehicle by myself was last year’s drive to Sharks. I’m sure the grins will be just as big, if not bigger this year!

Painting upper Timing Belt Covers
After cleaning the timing covers last night with degreaser, it was apparent that they needed help.
First, they were cleaned with brake cleaner, followed up with mineral spirits, and then taped off.
All dressed up ready to go.
Looking good!
Not Goodt! ... and missing section nowhere to be found. Is it hiding inside?
Time for another redo, so I called it a night.
Anyone have a line on a good used lower timing cover?

Custom Belt Inspector
Maybe I should repair this with a small piece of Plexiglas.
One minute everything was fine. Then I realized Porken ground strap was on wrong so I removed, fixed ground, and replaced the cover. A little later I see this missing.
Searched everywhere for the missing piece and can only presume it’s somewhere inside. Oh well, I getting really good at putting stuff on, taking it off, and putting it back on again.

One Cam over Off
Removed timing covers and missing piece was not inside.
I needed a little victory, so I focused my efforts elsewhere. I'm sure many already know this but a couple of these bolts take some persistence. I think I need a few more 5mm Allens of various configurations. Finally managed to get them all off.
Cover off:
Old versus renewed:
Recovered for now
Tensioner photos
How does one determine when it’s time to renew?
I’m hoping these still have a little life in them.

Missing Piece
I found the missing piece. Actually, it’s been missing all along. See pre-disassembly photo below:
Gave me a chance to clean up the work area and get ready for some big progress on Sunday... have social engagements the next two days.

Cam Cover number one
Slow start today, now I remember why:
Something is broken:
Assorted 5mm (the tiny ratchet from HF is the bomb):
One done and one to go:
Chain Tensioner (do these look okay?):
More shinny objects:

Kurt-
Looks like those 2 pics of the chain tensioner are of the same pad. That one looks good. On the other head, the one you have to look at is the bottom pad. Probably has similar wear, but need to look at it.
That pic of the flixible girl reminds me of the dancer I dated in high school. High kicks were her specialty.

I'd change those pads while you're in there ... cheap insurance. IIRC, the top pad is the one that's pressurized by the piston in the tensioner and can be changed. Availability of the pad on the underside is spotty, most people say it's only available as part of the tensioner mechanism, though a few have posted here saying they found the pad somewhere.
