Tricky question.

Do I aggressively WANT to sell my car? Eh, probably not.

Do I feel like it's time to sell my car and re-direct my resources at the current time of my life? Yeah, I do.

So I'm quite committed to selling the car. I thought I'd give the good folks of RL first shot at it. If no one here is interested, I'll list it locally and likely on eBay, etc.

I won't flat-out give it away. I might could be talked down from $27K just a bit - but not much. If it just doesn't sell at that price, well I guess I'll keep it a while longer.

But I am committed to giving it my best effort to sell the car at not only a reasonable price, but a pretty decent bargain price.

At $27k you ARE giving it away!! I just hate the thought of routine GTS pricing in the $20k range...ANYWHERE in that range!

I wish I could see past the RED.
This is a great deal for someone.
I think 27k is too low also.

Well, you may be right. But how do you define "too low?"

Is it too low for the select and rather small population of folks who love and cherish 928's? Probably.

OTOH, is it too low for the harsh realities of today's overall marketplace? Probably not.

A few years back, I listed it at $36K. No takers. I dropped it to $32K. No takers. So here's the deal:

1. For those who are true 928 believers, the price is likely too low. But that group is so few in number, that the marketplace of true believers is pretty small.

2. Plus, true believers typically already have a 928 of some variety. And they typically really love the shark they have. So are they going to sell off the shark they love just to buy my car? And if they are, how long is it going to take for them to sell their car?

So there are probably a few interested parties out there who reason, "Eh, by the time I sell my current car, bigs will have already sold his. So then I'll be without any shark at all. I think I'll just keep mine."

3. Mighty few - even in the ranks of the true believers - are going to have the money or the wifely permission to collect multiple cars. There are some crazies out there with a stable of 928's (you know who you are!) but not many.

4. So... For a variety of reasons, even the true believers might not be in the position right now to be able to pull off the purchase of a GTS. That reduces the marketplace even more.

5. As I disclosed in my original thread, the car has been in an accident. It was a minor accident. Air bags didn't employ. And it happened many years ago with the PO in NJ. The car has a normal title, not a salvage title.

I can reassure people all day long that I've owned the car for 6 years and I've never had even the slightest issue with the car. (Oh sure, I wish the PO had done a higher quality paint job on a couple areas of the car - but he didn't. So the paint job is a '10-footer' - looks beautiful until you get your nose right up close to the car, then you'll see a few flaws.)

But... Some folks are put off by any imperfection in the paint and don't want to be bothered with any kind of repaint at all.

6. Others are just simply put off by the accident history. I recognize this fact of life. Some folks, if they're gonna buy a GTS, want a pristine example with 35K miles and a perfect history. No matter how extensively a car has been restored and maintained - you just can't erase the "car has been in a wreck" label.

It's like the guy who is determined to marry a virgin. He might have some degree of interest in a very nice girl, but if he finds out she slept with another man - even if it was just one time and many years ago - she still isn't a virgin anymore! I accept this reality of the marketplace.

*********************

Bottom line: Here's the deal with this car: I bought it 6 years ago - in very different economic times - for $28+K. I had been lusting after and looking for a GTS for 2-3 years. At that point in time, this one was easily the cheapest GTS I had ever found. I just didn't want to spend $50+K for the pristine cars - although in retrospect, it would have been a financially wiser decision to do so.

In the 6 years I've owned the car, I've invested >$30K in bringing the car back to its present excellent condition. I may have set a new world's record for being upside-down in a car! But I don't care. It has been immensely satisfying to take a car that had been neglected and very easily could have been further neglected until it ultimately ended up as a home for mice - and saving it - bringing it back to maybe 98% of its former glory. It almost became a quest or a mission that I felt I owed to the 928 marque - and to these increasingly rare GTS models.

Here's who this car is meant for:

It is meant for the man who, like I did, LUSTS after a GTS. He just LOVES those big-*** rear fender flares, the body-color wing, and the satisfaction of owning the ultimate 928 model. But he simply doesn't have the money - or doesn't want to spend the money - to buy a pristine example.

He either doesn't mind a few minor flaws in the paint, or perhaps he has some paint skilz himself and can do his own quality repaint at a relatively small cost - or could at least do the prep work and reduce his cost of a repaint somewhat.

It's meant for someone who really wants to DRIVE his GTS.

It's maybe even meant for the man who has always wondered about how a GTS would perform with forced induction - but has hesitated because he didn't want to be guilty of the cardinal sin of modifying a hallowed GTS! Well, this GTS - by virtue of its accident history - isn't a "garage queen" GTS anymore. The 928 crowd probably wouldn't throw tomatoes if this one happened to end up supercharged, etc.

So, gents, the real market for this specific GTS is quite small. It's priced for that market.

Not even close. If intelligence were measured by the amount of money invested in a 928 versus possible return upon said investment my intellect would be on par with that of an amoeba.

Bigs, though I prefer other colors than Guards Red, if I had the money and space for a third 928 I'd do exactly as you suggested, buy your fully sorted and well running GTS and supercharge it. That way I'd have one stock, one stroked and one SC'd version of a 928. That would be perfect as far as I am concerned.

GLWS.

Bigs and Dan, your last two posts TOTALLY CRACKED ME UP!!! AWESOME!

Bigs you are quite right in your assessment, but as a TRUE BELIEVER it just KILLS ME to be forced to see the truth about these cars and how under appreciated I believe they are!

Fair and honest disclosure, excellent running condition, best of mechanics caring for it, honest seller, properly valued, very striking looks with updated wheels and tires. Best of luck with the sale. Under some slightly different personal conditions I'd be the buyer. Wouldn't even bother with a PPI. No need.
