Default New equal length 1.75" SS 32V headers-now ready for prime time

Apropos of the hose thread, I thought I'd share some teaser pics of one of Greg's new projects.

After a metric ton of fitment and packaging issues, Greg's finalizing some 1-3/4" tuned equal length (within 1/4") stainless headers for 5 and 5.4L cars. These pics show the pre-production mockups made in mild steel, prior to being jigged for production in SS.

In the name of science these are going to go on a number of 5.0, 5.4 and 6.5L engines with some 'before and after' dyno numbers so there will be some good data on them.

Here are a couple of shots showing test fitment on William A's car. No problems with the steering box, MM heat shields. These will fit with the front belly pan on, the rear may need some small spacers

(It was all I could do not to bust out the histoclear and go to town on the cosmoline....)

Concept looks real nice. Collector geometry looks "real" !

A couple of (hopefully helpful) observations based on fitting some different S4 headers to date:

1.) On #3 primary, any thoughts for the need to super insulate the pipe from near by fuel lines. Perhaps the need to re-route the fuel feed would be part of the fitment of these headers.

2.) On the drivers side, can all the bolts / buts be accessed as well as will the production pieces fit over the studs if the collectors are welded on.

Overall question... will the collectors be welded on ?

Why do you call them "shorty" headers?

I was thinking the same thing.
Sure look like full length to me.

Brain fart. They're not shorties, I was thinking about the comparison to the factory manifolds while typing. Edited the title appropriately.

Very nice! Do you/Greg know if these will work with the )(-pipes currently available?

Serious pipe pr0n here.

Same question as JW. Looks to me like the end on the collector is farther aft than stock.

I will just assume that slightly outside the frame of the camera is a prototype x-pipe that will bolt-on to stock resonators...

Jim:

Good questions.

Since we are working on heavy duty fuel hose replacements, insulating fuel hoses (even on the stock vehicle) is something we do. (Note the heat insulation applied to the pressure line from the fuel pump in Dan's thread about getting hosed.) Moving them around a bit, if needed, will be fairly straightforward. We need to get just a bit farther, until this happens. (It has taken about 3 months of fitting and starting over to get to this point....and that is with a professional doing it!) By the end of next week, we will have pipes done in stainless. The following week we should have a running, finished, dynoed vehicle. We will "adjust" the fuel lines as needed.

There is nary a chance of those pipes being welded at the collector. They barely fit in there, in pieces! There were a quite a few major things that we were trying to accomplish, and welding the collector wasn't one of them. We wanted equal length, a certain length to the collector, the pipes to fit under the stock undertrays, and to have the ability to use the long, stock convertors, if people desired. This required us to locate the collector very close to the front of the car...and very close to the bell housing. This makes getting the required length of pipe into that small area very, very difficult! That driver's side was literally started over (completely scrapped) eight times to get to this point!

I actually have no idea of what exhaust pipes are currently available....I'm always on my own path. The collectors are certainly very far forward and you should be able to modify almost any exhaust to fit.

That being said, I've ran the 928 engine (in many variations) through pipe length programs and all of hose programs insist that that any X-pipe be a long way back, in the exhaust system.

We've been doing our own exhaust system, for quite some time. We will be making a complete system (in stainless) appropriate for these headers, of course.

We are going to attach a complete stock system to these headers.....only modifing the pipes between the stock manifolds and the convertors. The convertors will be in the stock location.

Greg,

are you building this headers for early 5 L S 3 engines with the 2 bolt fastening design?

Thanks in advance !

They look very nice, from someone who has mahe his own equal length headers, (within 1/4" they look very laminar and the fact that you can access the nuts that is a conveniance. One one side of mine, they literally fall off and are easy to fit. That is on the drivers side of a RHD car. The passenger side is bit of a bitch, I could improve them but why? As for power, they produce it and I'm sure they will too.

Beootifull! BUT like most headers I have seen, these look like a pain to take off and put on with the motor in the car. I have permament scars on my right wrist. These headers look like they hug the side of the motor so they should clear the inner fender. Same with Devek headers. BUT the issue I saw with the Devek headers was the collectors extending way back, requiring the motor to be tilted at a severe angle and pulled way forward to clear the firewall, and it looked like it would not clear the motor mounts or run into other forward obstructions anyway. If the collectors were removable and not welded, then it looks like the headers could be left in-place, which, for me, greatly simplifies pulling the motor, although that might introduce other nightmares (mating four pipes, leaks).
