Brake Caliper Color
Can anyone tell me what color the brake calipers were painted, from the factory, on a US 83 model? Maybe they were just natural steel? Trying to keep my restoration as close to factory look as possible. Thanks for all the help! From a new member in the NE Atlanta area.

I think they were originally bare metal. Matt may be thinking of 86.5 on, which were black from the factory.
Here is a trick that I learned for rejuvenating cast iron exhaust manifolds from a guy that grew up with a father heavily into restoring old cars for concours... I don't know if steel is porous enough for this to work but here goes anyway:
First clean off any crusty rust. If you really want a pristine resto bead blasting the disassembled parts might be the way to go, but protect the caliper bores.
Find some graphite spray -- I forget the brand name he liked, but it was little more than graphite in an alcohol carrier, packaged in an aerosol can. Spray a couple of good coats on the parts, letting it soak in thoroughly.
Once the parts are completely dry, coat them with high-temp clear engine paint.
We did this on an early Barracuda and the manifolds still looked fresh-cast years later. You can probably do this for less than $50, not counting caliper rebuild kits but including bead-blasting, graphite and paint.
I was considering doing this with my OB brakes until it entered my head that what I really wanted was S4 brakes.
