Question Alignment

Should have the car ready for alignment by the end of next week. I spoke to my normal front ned folks and they RAN AWAY from touching the car. This is the RR that is being redone. Is this a DEALER only type of deal for alignment? If so what is the AVERAGE Cost on the east coast.
Thank you
Happy New Year

Any good alignment shop should have no problem. The only trick is that the front-end bushings are stiff, and if the car is lifted first then it needs to be driven XX miles (pick your favorite number between 10 and 100) or pulled down to the original ride-height (see the WSM).

And there's the catch: Most good shops will want to lift the front end to check the bushings and rack for play, to make sure your money is not wasted. That's useful, but get them to do it when you make the appointment-- then come back for the alignment, without lifting.

Cost should be ballpark $100, YMMV.

Cheers,

Front was done when He got the new rubber JUST need the rear. Is that the porblem for them or are they just hung up on easy cars? I have a good BMW dealer close and I have the specs. I am in Aiken S.C. with the Best Porsche people in Jacksonville Fla at Brumos which I could load the car and take to them.
Was going to try and string the car to get it cloase in the rear so it could be driven.

Here in OKC the local chain tire shops have the no-lift alignment machines. My problem is they would not align outside the factory spec, ie. more negative camber in front. I had to take it to a "race shop." Ended up costing $200 because of the time it took to adjust caster.

Find a good alignment shop with a Hunter digital machine, and tell the tech to do a "rolling compensation" with the car on the rack after you drive it on to setup the machine. Do not lift the car.

Any good tech can do it, and most shops have the "Alldata" subscription which has pixx of where the adjustment screws are. Get all 4 wheels aligned at the same time. The hit could have upset all 4 even if it was only hit in one spot.

Anyway, it costs about $100-$150 here in CA... I've been taking mine to the same shop for years, and once I showed them what to do the first time, they can do it blindfolded now.. They will also adjust to whetever settings I give them within the range of adjustability of the parts..

For example they can't set it to 15 Deg Negative Camber 30 degrees Caster, and 30 Degrees + Toe if the parts don't allow those specs....

Good luck..

Thank You now I can approach a race shop, Phelon Motor sports who I talk to about my Modified when I get hung up on as I call it a "DAD" question. My dad who has been gone for almost 30 years would have 98% of the answers since he had been there and done that.

If you have to go to a dealer, McDaniels in Columbia should be able to do it. I have had the dealer here do mine since they use to charge $80, it's now well over that so I'll be taking it into a local independant Porsche shop here next week for an alignment since I just changed all the shocks.

Thank you that is closer than 280 miles down to Brumos. The wife is excited to drive her no toy. This is the first car since she bought the "E" type that she is excited about.
Will take pictures on the progress of the main repair and what I find.

Some here, including myself, use the DYI alignment technique shown here...

http://members.rennlist.com/captearl...ALIGNMENT.html

If you take the car to an alignment shop for the rear alignment, they will still need to realign the front. So your looking at the cost of a 4-wheel alignment. The reason, is that if they just adjust the front, they will compensate the front alignment for any deviation of the rear thrust angle, otherwise the car would drift to one side. You can't assume, and no alignment shop would either, that the rear could be brought back to center thrust and the front will still be correct.
