Default TB Failure???

Hi friends!
So i have some engine troble with my 88mod s4 5-speed.
The car will start for a few seconds but backfires and will not idle.
I was first suspecting some kind of electric failure but couldent find any so i moved on to my timing belt.
Got spark, got fuel and do not seem to be any vacuum leak's.

This is what i found:
First i turned the engine so the timing marks for my cams lined up.
When they lined up my cranck was 180 degres of.

Then i turned my engine until my cranc mark lined up and my cam was of.

Then i turned until my cranck lined up again and my cam mark was of again.

Then i turned it some more til my cam marks lined up and i was back to the start.

So what do you guys think...do i have a catastrofe on my hands?
Going to borrow myself a compresion-tester tomorrow and see what it tell's me.

Ron.

Good luck...I hope there is not permanent damage. Sounds like my '92 GTS after a T-belt change when the shop got the timing off by several teeth or however much it was... would hardly idle and it would pop and backfire. Once it was properly timed, BINGO!

I find it hard to believe that a timing belt issue would cause the crank to be EXACTLY 180 degrees off on both cams? The car has had no work done to it since it ran fine?

Is the crank pulley/damper on backward?

Hahahha, balancer is backwards. See the numbers on the pulley, they are upside down.

Yes, the damper is on backwards. Start over, your timing is way off because the damper index key is not symmetric

Put the balancer on correctly and check the timing marks again.

first if the car was running i would remove the crank bolt and washer and then figure out way i needed to turn the crank so the keyway was at 3 O clock position this will put the crank at the 45 degree position so the valves wont be damaged , when you turn them.
NOTE the 3 O clock position is with you looking at the front of the engine and the keyway slot facing the driver side of the car.
You may get lucky and just have to flip the damper but the timing marks should be verified, and you should remove the plugs so the engine will be easy to turn to verify the timing

Or he can turn the balancer around and then see exactly how much the timing is out.

There might be something else going on- the angle of the belt on the cam sprocket, seen through the ports on the tops of the covers before they were removed, is not a good sign, nor is that loose allen bolt (socket-head cap screw) on the cam sprocket.
