I don't think we spent $5,000 on hotel and car the entire 2 weeks we were there. If you had more money, you could rent even faster cars. At first it feels fast, but after a little while you get speed blind and it doesn't feel like you're doing anything more than 100. Though, those euro market 911s do make it feel like your butt is just skimming above the ground, which is an interesting feeling at 176mph.
Kudos..!

I have been trying to tell so many people that this is a great way to have a vacation in Germany..! You can rent Turbos, 360 MM's, and all sorts of cars from SIXT, with full insurance, and TUV certified and inspected cars, drive your heart's content, and be speed drunk all the time you're there. Even an Audi A6 TDI does 250Kmh with no sweat whatsoever... Granted that's only 155 Mph...

On the other hand, having a beast in your stable is priceless..!

Tim & Cheryl, Congrats..! Hope to join you guys in the fun once my car is ready..

What is that 300 ft per SECOND ! The average blink of an eye is 3/10th - 4/10s of a second or over 100 feet while "blind" and most do this about 25 times per minute......Amazing how the human body can adapt .

Jim, I believe that the few ORR drivers that still blink during an event have learned to only blink one eye at a time...

I will say that despite TUV I was glad to have brought my tire pressure gauge with me. Whoever set the pressures set them to ~30psi all around (very wrong for a 996).

Owning YOUR OWN 200+ mph street car.... PRICELESS!

There is NOTHING like owning (and driving) your own SUPERCAR! Sure it is nice to rent one every now and then (afterall I did the WCD thing 12 months ago and drove a McLaren SLR, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Lambo Gallardo SL, Audi R8 and Maser GT) but there is NOTHING like driving my own '92 Euro GTS on the A95 between Austria and Munich at 165mph!!!
Oh, believe me, this I get. It's not without reason that I took a Mercedes that originally had a top speed of 117mph (once saw 121mph going downhill) and made it do...well I don't know what it will do but it's something more than 153mph.

But to me it sounded like you pay $5,000 to drive one of this guy's cars, not your own.

I don't know if we're talking about the same thing. The sensation I'm talking about is that it seems like your brain is just processing the information more quickly, you know you're going fast but it doesn't feel like stuff is rushing past you, you just naturally have a point of focus further down the road (which I realize is what racers do all the time, but it seems your body will naturally do this even if you were never taught to do it after a short while at 170+)

Marlinspike,

You are correct...in the WCD event you drive THEIR car... You are also correct for $5k you sure could have some fun for a week, maybe even in Germany. But I am not sure you would have any better memories than working with some very talented road racers helping you get around a makeshift race track fast and then hitting it hard to get to 200mph...

I am not trying to be advisarial but this is exactly what speed drunk is! You get very used to the speed and yes you are processing things very quickly. The things you normally use to judge speed (mile posts, brush, center dashes, etc) seem to slow down and it is a very mellow non threatening feeling. Your perception has been adjusted away from reality. It is kind of like an alert hypnotic trance. The problem is you have not slowed down and whether it is 150, 170, 200 mph you you have conditions up ahead that you cannot navigate at that speed. Years ago I got caught up in this exact scenario and entered a safe 145 mph turn at a very unsafe 175 mph because it seemed so slow. Things turned out ok (but scary), my wife and I now constantly talk to each other and we are aware of how fast this feeling can return.
Anyway, it is just my $0.02.

So I guess we are talking about the same thing, and it's apparently dangerous. Is there some method of avoiding it then?

What worked best?

And +1 to Marlinspike's question just above.

Where do you get a $25K motor (and all the other necessary stuff) for $25K?

Is that anything like "That airplane will never hurt him, he is ten miles behind it"?

I can't remember, but on that 996 and on my dad's 996 I've always liked the factory spec which is IIRC something like 32/44.

to build a reliable 928 engine that will power 200+ mph will cost MORE than $25k.......then you need to upgrade the car too.....it ends up being very pricey

Want a 200mph car for not a bunch of $$$ Buy a Z06, drop in some cams and exhaust & your done....
