I disagree, you could have a 928 do that for $20k, which includes the car. Get a 5-speed S4 (with 2.2 rear pinion) for $8k, supercharge it and tear down/regasket it in the process. New suspension, $2k? Get some misc aero bits at Home Despot and lower the car to 115mm, done. I'm assuming no labor cost here.

Trust me, getting to 200mph is not easy or cheap.

I have zero desire to go more than 150 mph in anything without wings, but if I did and wanted to do it cheap I would take any old 928 that was handy, drop in a Euro hybrid motor, add nitrous and duct tape. Tires and suspension would of course have to be in good condition, and some kind of welded in cage sounds smart, but I think around $12k should cover it as long as you do most of your own work.

I also think there is a difference between ORR where you are 160+ for 50 to 100 miles reaching 200+ mph at the fastest sections and having a car that is capable of if for a short burst.
If you want a car that can reliably do 200 mph for extended periods, it is gonna cost $$$$
I think it has been proven what the most reliable avenue is there.
In ORR and on the track, a well built stroker is worth its weight in gold for performance and durability.
And terms of performance for your money, even with the high dollar 928s. The cost is probably less than those that run competatively with them.

In theory you can build a 928 that "should" be able to break 200mph for the prices you mentioned...BUT there is a HUGE difference between "theory" and reality....yes there are a handful of 928's around that make enough HP to be able to mathematically break 200mph but how many have actually done it? 2......& only 1 is still running....and still breaking 200 on a regular basis....however I can guarantee 100% that it cost FAR more than $20k to do it.. I would guess a 3-4 factor of that number....maybe more....
I like this motto from Mark Anderson "which part did you think was cheap?...the racing part of the Porsche part?"
Bottom line is speed cost $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and safe reliable speed cost a square factor of base speed...

Ok, so I've been around the 928 "scene" now for over 10 years. I pretty much know all the aftermarket parts that exist and you can buy, but one can always learn something new. Can you please explain to me which parts this extra $40k will go to in order to make a reliable 200mph 928 that goes in a straight line? There are only minor external/body tweaks required. Then there is suspension and ride height. Full-on racing is much harder on the transmission than a 200mph run, so that should not be a problem. After that, it's the engine that can put out 450 - 500rwhp at WOT for ~3 minutes and hold together. MLS head gaskets? Bigger oil cooler? Chump change. Bigger injectors, fuel pump and sharktuned are all things included with a stroker/supercharged car. Now if you are including labor, I agree with you 100%. You could even add $10k and rebuild the engine with lower compression and custom drilled crank and still would be nowhere near those price numbers, even though that is not required at all.
I bet the car Louie has for sale right now could break 200mph if it had the earlier transmission with the 2.2 rear pinion. Just because only 2 have doesn't mean others can't.

Brian, I agree with you... if you want RELIABLE LONG TERM 200+ mph power, BIG MONEY! HUGE MONEY and TIME!
Dan, I agree that there are ways (you have done them) to put enough HP on the pavement to theoretically hit 200... It is still not cheap. If you have to PAY someone (as most would to build the type of engine Brian is talking about) to do it $10k won't even be close! I personally can't install an S/C or Turbo kit not to mention the MASSIVE amounts of tuning that are required to make those things work properly w/o going BOOM! That is all Brian is saying... You are not comparing apples to apples when you say "X" car *can* hit 200 and then doing it and then doing it again and again and discounting the labor is not fair either.

James has it right......its not about building a "dyno queen" that throws down a large HP number for 15 seconds....its about a complete design of the whole system...everything from engine-trans-suspension-SAFETY-aero & more... all things need to be addressed....it is not simple to do correctly....just look at all the time Louie has spent dynoing his monster and the SC beast.....
The bottom line is build a car that fits your needs-wants...if you want a big HP car that will hit 0-??? in say 10 seconds...then do it......... but if you want to be able to sustain 180+mph for miles on end in 100F temps and high elevation...most ORR races are 30-45 minutes....then you need a complete system to do it...the only place in the world that is possible to do it is in ORR...I would guess the autobahn had too much traffic to do it consistently...or SAFELY....
In regards to price...yes if you have the skills to design-fabricate-install a 200mph system...and labor is zero...then sure it reduces cost....but if you have to pay a professional to do it....its not gonna be cheap..

Lots of cars can go 200+mph-on paper. The problem is figuring out how to get that damn wall of air out of the way. It takes lots of sustained HP to reach that last 1000 rpm in your tallest gear.
