Default 200mph-12/2/09 USA Today article

While leafing through the drivel in today's USA Today Entertainment section, I cameacross an article about a guy that is selling 200mph drives in various fancy cars. Mercs, Lambo's, GT's , etc. For $5,000 you can spend one day driving these things up and down a 2.3 mile airstrip.

Got me to wondering, who do y'all know that has busted two tons in their 928? Being new to this game, I think the only person I've met to do it in any car was Mark Martin (NASCAR). I spent an afternoon with him a few years ago and never really got around to asking him what it felt like (at least I don't think I asked him).

So give us some brief details. I know I saw a video here a little while back taht was bad ***. Anyway, check out the article nonetheless. Kind of an interesting read.

I haven't read the article, but I heard that Mike Borders is mentioned in it. Mike owns MKM, the group that organizes the open road races in Nevada. Check out www.openroadracing.com Several of us here go to the events, including the current 200mph 928 standard bearers Tim and Cheryl Dey.

Use search function to read about past ORR adventures, including George and I blowing the engine at 189mph a couple years back

And George and I cheating death at 189mph https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-flatline.html

These are just a couple of the many threads in here....

That is World Class Driving and that is their 200 MPH event. They do it 2 or 3X per year and yes it is $5k... YOU get to drive though...not someone else! If you are good you might actually take SEVERAL of their cars to 200+ mph!

I just did their drive 13 months ago (not quite 13) and I STILL have a woody from it! That was just their drive 5 exotic cars for the afternoon switching from car to car. I did manage to hit 140+ in the Ferrari 430 Scuderia and the Lambo Gallardo SuperLeggera!

I highly recommend them.

Weight makes almost no difference when it comes to top speed.....only counts on rate of acceleration.

We are one of the offending 928's that have officially broken 200 mph. We have made it in all six events that car has started in. My lovely wife recently kicked my A$$ at the Silver State Classic Challange with a GPS reading of 209.9 mph and an official radar time of 204. Reaching 200 is not as hard as keeping it there and finishing the race with motor intact.

Next year if all goes well I will respectfully put her in her place with an even faster speed and then she will get a chance to return the favor in the fall.

Hopefully George will join us in the exclusive club next year.

With that kind of money, why not just go to Germany and rent a fast car? Granted it wasn't 200mph, but my dad and I went to Germany a few years back and rented a 996 and pretty much did 176mph any time we went anywhere. I don't think we spent $5,000 on hotel and car the entire 2 weeks we were there. If you had more money, you could rent even faster cars. At first it feels fast, but after a little while you get speed blind and it doesn't feel like you're doing anything more than 100. Though, those euro market 911s do make it feel like your butt is just skimming above the ground, which is an interesting feeling at 176mph.

We call it speed drunk and it is a very dangerous condition to be in. If you do not recognize the state you are in you will over drive the car into turns with disasterous results. You will also close up on the cars ahead of you at a staggering rate.

The best analogy we have come up with is riding in the Beast @ 200+ is like saddling up a ballastic missle and riding it down the course.

marlinspike, you know the commercial...

928 cost $10,000
Enough HP to 200+ mph cost $25,000
Owning YOUR OWN 200+ mph street car.... PRICELESS!

There is NOTHING like owning (and driving) your own SUPERCAR! Sure it is nice to rent one every now and then (afterall I did the WCD thing 12 months ago and drove a McLaren SLR, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Lambo Gallardo SL, Audi R8 and Maser GT) but there is NOTHING like driving my own '92 Euro GTS on the A95 between Austria and Munich at 165mph!!!
