[tech] - LA area engine/performance shop has Forged JE pistons for Alusil
I asked him if the problems with the coatings are done. He says they are.

Of course its not listed on his site. Our 928 stuff never really is on these sorts of sites.
I was originally calling about BMW stuff, but because I had him on a roll and I saw on his website "Porsche - New" I asked.
Seems that he has the specific coating for our alusil blocks. He mentioned 944s as the more popular iteration, but its basically the same thing, as we all know.
So. If Each piston is around 165 or so, then we are talking about 1320 for a set of pistons, plus the coating which I know from personal experience would be around 40 a piston, maybe a bit less.
That is about the same price as Chris White had for his Wiesner or whatever forged pistons.
I just thought I would interject today with some more good news. We have enough options now that I do not think we need to do the nikasil block scenario any longer. There are so many engines out there now with Alusil in the performance community that the solution seems available.
I haven't bought anything. I have some other 928 related bills to pay first, but when the time comes, I will probably either be using these guys to chris white for a 10:1 compression forged piston to go along with some good boost. *If its proven to work*

Nikasil we know works from many engines and many miles.
What sort of track record is there for either of these pistons in a 928? In another Alusil block?
Do you know which coating they use?

Yes, Nikasil works. About 2000 for the work, plus another 1500 for the pistons compared to 1700 for the pistons *still forged and any compression ratio I want* will make me investigate.

I don't know the coating. I assume its similar to the PC-9 from Swain.

Had a Nikasiled block in my 951. Cratered after 20K miles because builder used stock rings instead of the ones for Nikasil. Local 911 Racer Shop says similar experience with racing 911s that try Nikasil.

My own plan is, used 968 pistons, maybe recoated or something, bored stock block, find some high performance stock rod that is close and have it resized to fit. Stock crank, thinking chevy drilled, undecided on adding stroke with a smaller rod journal.
Maybe $2000 incl shipping both ways on Nikasil?

I'm done trying crap like this....but wish you good luck! The makers are going to prove to me it works, for me to believe it. I'm done trying people's crap on my dime....and it always ends up being my dime...or my 10K, in this case! I'm not resistant to change....I'm resistant to eating other people's unproven theories.
I've yet to see a coating that works, other than the plating that the factory has Mahle and KS put on their pistons.....pure and simple.....end of story.
I'm redoing an engine, right now (on my 10K) that Mahle made the pistons for. They swore that they would work perfectly in an Alusil bore. Had the fricking engineer, on the phone, in a 3 way conversation with SSF (who had the pistons made). Coating fell off in 1000 miles. Pistons dug into the bores...junk. Of course, by the time the engine was done, it was over a year, so Mahle's claiming the warranty period is over and they are not responsible. They refuse to pay for the repair, or the damage. Corporate bull**** pisses me off....they screwed up...not me...they should fix it!!!!
They'll end up not paying and I'll "eat" someone's screw up....again. The only satisfaction I get is that I had a set of Mahle Pistons that I bought for a big block Chevy I'm building. Bought them brand new. After the Porsche thing, I walked out to the dumpster and threw them in the fricking trash. Screw Mahle...they'll find out that in this country, when you screw someone, people just quit using your crap...and you go out of business. Many have gone down this road....all fail!
I've redone two of Theshie's engines with "proven" coatings that worked....neither one made it over 100 miles. Who did this coating?

I was advised to use the Alusil and iron coat the piston skirts. I don't recall off hand which rings were mentioned... I can go back and dig through my notes.

Why is it that regardless of what failed or why, it is always the guy that worked on it fault.

The guy that does all of my transmissions came to the shop today to tell me about a customer that he did a transmission for 3 weeks ago, the got a nail in a tire and wanted to know why he had nails in his shop, that is the only place they could have got a nail in the tire, after THREE WEEKS...............................

I can't speak from personal use, but Lindsay Racing is a highly respected 944 performance outfit that swears by using Wiseco pistons with some new coating they apply in house, at Wiseco I mean (I asked if it was Swain Tech). No failures as of yet. They also use I believe gas nitrided rings to get them to hold up in the bores. A rep. there told me I can order whatever size wrist pin, compression, valve pocket depth, etc. I want for about $1300 coated and with rings. Ahh they're gonna' look good with my Groden rods...I digress.

The Woessner made pistons can be purchased with the ferrostan coating. I am pretty sure this is the exact same coating our pistons had from the factory.

Weil doch irgendwo Eisen in der "Paarung" sein soll hatten die Kolben eine galvanisch erzeugte Eisenschicht. Bei Mahle hiessen die "Ferrostan" (version I und II), bei KS "Ferrocoat". Auf deren Website erzählt Mahle dass sie in 1999 "Ferroprint" Kolben in Serie gebracht haben.

Maybe under the counter. They are selling something called molykote over the counter and say it will work without issues. I'd hate to be one to try if true or not. Its most likely same stuff which is shown in Lindsey racing website under Wössner pistons. In pics only area below rings is coated. That doesn't seem too promising either even though skirt is normally first area which seem to wear out.

Lindsey Racing rebuilt my 951 motor that had Nikasil and cratered. They bored it out to get rid of the Nikasil and went with coated JE Pistons on the Alusil. The head lifted and burned a hole in the head gasket at 4500 miles. When the engine was torn down the cylinder walls were scratched to heck. This was just before they went to Wiseco pistons.
