Good point.....but I wouldn't call it cheating...as we will document it in our "build" sheet documenting expenses.....so if I can get a set for $200 and sell something off the car (say exhaust system) for $200...then I'm golden..& thats the plan!

I am quite optimistic about our chances if the 84 holds together...given the "team" of drivers.....Mark Anderson....Mark Kibort....myself (weak link) Clint and John (Evil Genius racing) its safe to say we should be contenders......
But we have to finish this one 1st! :

another dyno update....after removing the cat and installing a single 2.5" system it went to 187whp @ 5250 and 246ftlbs @ 3125....pretty good for a 1984 automatic.....

i am kinda disapointed at the run after the exhuast, that was alot of work for 1 hp, but it did raise the powerband up. my camera died but ill get a picture of the budget system for you guys, it still has the stock primary muffler, then it goes to a polished magnaflow fart can looking muffler at the end we had laying around, it looks alright and it cost just about nothing in parts, much louder now but it is a bit raspy.
i was making a video of the last run but i ran out of gas! still i think with about 9' of base timing and maybe a little bit of leaning it out. it may hit 190 like i predicted.

How does one get the proof of the 500 dollars?
I have an 86 that I got in trade, sold everything off, and now I have the body - is that considered free or negative $ since I sold everything? I have some emails, etc of the sales of the pieces. Then if I can piece together the car from parts I have to racing form, without buying anything - is that the idea? I rebuilt a 4.5L engine that I already had from another car - is that technically free?

They aren't super sticklers about the money if the car looks like a piece of crap. Rust and dents help your cause a lot. The car we run was more like a $1500 car and they don't mind it.

You are pinning your hopes on the wrong number... torque is what will help in this race, which will be tight, slow, and traffic-filled. They'll never need max power output, but they will use the available torque on the exit of every turn...

also the AFR is not correct...it wasn't printed on this chart...but was a steady 13.3 falling to 12.8 up top

this is SO true......you don't need a "fast" car until the last two hours of the race....assuming you get there....put your best driver in for the last stint and let her rip!! & we have some excellent drivers on the team....

You asked or commented, so Ill make a comment.
No, the torque is only an indication of how flat the HP curve is. its is actually pretty flat for a 185hp engine, but still, its only 185hp. you will operate the car from 4500rpm to 6000rpm or you will be losing valuable acceleration off any turn.remember, if you are not at 4000 to 4500rpm off the turn, you will be in the wrong gear and all the hp that a stroker has, will barely be better! (or torque) . Remember, HP at any vehicle speed will determine the REAR wheel torque. of a turn, etc, you want as much power that is possible.

The nice thing about the hp curve is that it is pretty flat, so short shifting the engine can be done without really doing too much damge to acceleration "off the turns". not a huge difference from 6000rpm shifts to 5500rpm limit shifts.
what is the rpm scale on the bottom of the graph?

Going to 32V downpipes, grinding out the cast iron manifold outlets to the 32V gasket ID, stock single catback w/carved pumkin, and ~13° ignition advance made the lil' ol' 4.5 in my '81 auto make over 200 rwhp and 270 rwtq sae.
With 16V single cat downpipes into a 3" single w/flowmasters, I couldn't get over 180 rwhp and 220 rwtq.
(FYI: stock exhaust system measurements)
