Default Engine Block condition

What do you guys think about the bores? Are they okay or its a good 104mm bore doner?

Hard to tell much from a picture but it looks fine. The "deep" scratches don't really leak much. Really needs to be a gouge from a loose chunk, like part of a ring, to mess up the bore.

Will the worst/depest one catch your nail? The flash of a camera often makes things look worse than they really are.

It barely does.

I was told its more feel around with fingers, fingernails, than looky.

OTOH if you want to do a 104mm bore, and you don't have another block its not so perfect you shouldn't use it.

D,

Are you saying I need perfect cylinder wall to build a 104mm bore motor? If there are some scratches, wouldn't the boring take care of the these?

You can have some really deep scratches and the boring will take it out. It's a rether simple equation. If the depth of the scratch is deeper than, half the size of the difference, between the old bore and the new bore........the scratch will come out.

Reverse, I want to do a 104mm motor, but would hate to use too nice of a block when a nasty one will be fine post boring, but if what you have is a fairly nice block, there is nothing really wrong with boring it to 104mm if that is what you want to do.

They "look" fine, but that one scratch can be an issue if you can feel it with your fingernail, or it catches as you run your nail across it. you can take it to someone that can refreshen it with the SI/AL process.

I have either read it somewhere or someone told me that the 79' 4.5L is the same block they use for the 4.7L. Is this true? With a bore and updated parts you can make an S motor out of 4.5L?

Not trying to hijack the thread just got my brain working once you talked about boring out a block.

There is enough material in 4.5 and 4.7 for 5L 100mm bore, at least in most of them.

You need pistons to match the bore size, cheapest way I know to get the pistons is to buy the whole short block, so in most cases boring a 4.5L would be pointless.

The chance of something unexpected being wrong after boring I think is pretty great as well.

OTOH where you are and whats available could be the deciding factors.

Wally did the numbers on this a while back. Something like "assume sonic velocity" and ends with it just doesn't matter. It's really inconsequential to have a scratch or five.

Unless you're a perfectionist with the $$$ or are making a boosted track car, I'd forget it.

If it hasn't been made clear yet Gio - You are taking away 2mm of the wall of the 100mm block. 2mm is quite alot. It will not be affected by any of the scratches that I see there. Is that the block we talked about?

If you have that block decked, cleaned, and bored to 104 you would never recognize it.
