Mark- which 'that' bolt are you talking about?

Likely that extra-long one...

Mark, whichever one it is, remove it now and replace with a new fastener, torqued correctly.

For most bolts, you won't damage the bolt itself if you follow the masic torque specs for all the NOS (Not Otherwise Specified) bolts on the car. They may not be tight enough for some applications that specifically have higher-strength bolts fitted.

If you are replacing bolts at all, the WSM and AO/Rob's spreadsheet specifically call out any high-strength bolt requirements. In general, if you see any torque requirements that are bigger than the NOS spec, you should be looking for that high-strength bolt for that use. So you can verify that the WSM or spreadsheet number matches what you are installing.

Kevin, the torque values for M12 mains on that spreadsheet are from the 90-93 Tech Specs book and should be correct for a '91 (see below, pp. 20-21). The WSM values (on page 10-03) are for the 4.5L motors, so both are correct, just for different year ranges.

oh.. sorry.. the pivot bolt for the early water pump and tensioner. ( i have that on my S4)

its the tensioner Arm bolt. Im wondering if the stress on that bolt might be more on the aluminum threads of the water pump or the head of bolt junction.

gosh, i dont to go in there again. but its haunting me. i dont think i used the full spec of the M10 on this M8, in M10 clothes, (20 vs 40nm), but thats 14 vs 30ft-lbs.... i would say im at 25ft-lbs if i was to guess. i stopped before the click and went to find the little porsche 928 book. it felt pretty strong to that point.

I also put down the torque values where applicable. THere's nothing here that's not in the WSM or tech books, but at least it's all in one printable spreadsheet

DISCLAIMER: A- this isn't complete, it's specific for a 5-speed S4+ cars, so all the auto-tranny specific stuff is missing. B), there's no guarantee that all these #'s are correct- PLEASE let me know if anyone sees an error. C) Some of the descriptions may make sense only to me or to whichever Franz did the WSM translating. I'm happy to change anything that's unclear and update the spreadsheet- send me your corrections/suggestions!

Hopefully this'll be useful to someone.

Here's the link to the spreadsheet so it's printable for the garage:

Also, if anyone has a clue as to how you can format Excel so that the column spacing is preserved when imported into a RL post, I'm all ears.... Apologies for the garbled mess below, but all the data

Default Bump for another noble gesture

On page 4 post 46 of Rob's thread are AO's tables for automatic trans torque values.

Could somebody tell me the torque value for the 8 17mm bolts that go under the exhaust ports?

one thing nice about my water pump/overheating problem was that i was able to go back in and remove /replace that pivot bolt that was torqued to near 40nm vs the spec of 20nm... that means it was tightened 30lb-ft vs the spec of 15lb-ft. talking to a close friend that makes a material stretcher machine (charpy machine which test tensile strength of materials ) to find failure points, he said as long as it didnt break , it was probably ok.

I did a test on an old pump and an old pivot bolt with washer...... it snap'ed at 25lb-ft. gulp... guess i was running on borrowed time there too.

anyway, should be fixed in a day or so with a brand new pivot bolt to 20nm, not 40!

[QUOTE=mark kibort;12840460]oh.. sorry.. the pivot bolt for the early water pump and tensioner. ( i have that on my S4)

gosh, i dont to go in there again. but its haunting me. i dont think i used the full spec of the M10 on this M8, in M10 clothes, (20 vs 40nm), but thats 14 vs 30ft-lbs.... i would say im at 25ft-lbs if i was to guess. i stopped before the click and went to find the little porsche 928 book. it felt pretty strong to that point.

Hi gang

Resurrecting this old thread...my water temp sensor (not the Temp II) has gone bye bye....one terminal hot is infinite resistance...the other hot is 54 ohms....hilarious right.

I'm reading the torque specifications in ft lb is 18 - 22 ....that feels high and want to confirm that is for ft pounds and not NM?

The reason I'm asking is that the spec for the Temp II is 9 lb into the same water bridge...without taking the temp II out and looking...is it a question of the coarseness of the threads?

Fun fact...I've seen 25 - 30 NM as the spec....also I have a couple of our excel files that give the 18 - 22 lb ft number....

Thanks.

Does anyone have the spreadsheet for a 16v 928?
Or can anyone re post the 32v spreadsheet and I'll correct/modify it for 16v owners as I'm going thru any visible engine bolts and replacing them with yellow chromate zinc bolts.

You need the small Porsche booklet. Look in Michael Bennos database.
The Porsche parts sheet is at Porsche Classic for download.
