Is stamped area exact level with top of the block machining? If it is little bit lower it has been machined down to make blank area and stamped differently. Early engines are different in this respect. Their stamping surface is lower down and thus is not machined same way as these later engines.

AFAIK boat engine type was M28/70 and none of the numbers between M28/22 and M28/43 were used.

What is pair number next to oil filter mounting point? Its possible it will tell something about this engines history. What about casting week of the upper part at rear end of the block. It should fall within some time period before '89 MY or stamped numbers will not make sense.

Erkka,
The paired #'s at the oil filter area are 3982
The # at the rear, bottom, girdle is 928 101 109 6R
The date circle area, rear of block/center is 0.9
___________________________________> 88

& there is a square grid box, at the
rear/back of the block
I can't make out the #'s

Thanks for any info you can shead on the history of this block.
Joe

[QUOTE=90 S-4;6970504]09/88 = week 9 in 1988. Its logical time what early '89 MY block casting week needs to be. If it was meant to be non turbo 300hp boat engine sold at the time its very likely similar to normal S4 blocks. In any case rare find as 00002 part of the number points out.

What's all this about a boat engine? What type of boat manufacturer was Porsche selling their engines to any why? This should be an interesting read...

Erkka,
Thanks for clearing up the MY of the block.
Based on the #'s stamped on the top/front of the block (M28/23 86K 00002)
What should I be calling this thing ? a S4 car block with unusual numbering ?
Or, a boat motor block ? what do you think, what would say.. ?
Thanks,
Joe

Casting number in it is normal S4 number so it cannot be too far off from period S4 block. Number is certinly strange and could have been used in 300 hp NA boat engine Porsche sold to Wizeman. AFAIK twin turbo race engine was M28/70.
