Default Another block ID thread...

I had over another forum member (namasgt) over yesterday to look at the engine from my 79. All the paperwork done by Andial says the block is a 5.0 liter. The P.O. told me the block was bought new from Porsche and the receipt says all parts are new unless it say used. The receipt shows new and used parts, the block being new.
Problem is, Ali and I noticed the mounting area for the CPS was different than his S4 block.

Ali thinks the block might be an early euro block. I have no clue...

There are no ID markings (the M28 number) because the block was bought new from the factory, so I can't determine it that way. There is however numbers behind the clutch.

Does anyone know where to find the build date? I need to Identify this engine so I can sell it accurately.
Brendan, if you would like to stop by, please do.

BB

Lacking the normal stamped ID, maybe start with all the casting numbers you can find on the block and/or the heads?

Did you figure out what kind of engine you have?
It’s definitely not a S4 block, looked like a pre 80 block to me. The block has all the mounting points for the 16 valve intake and fuel distributor that the S4 block does not have. It could be a 4.5 US engine with euro fuel system. There is no mounting point for the crank sensor on the block.

Im still looking for a good S4 short block any one has one please let me know.

Here is a post from Louie (on our local pacnw list)..

I have my engine from the '90GT with 82,600 miles and bad rod bearing. The #6
piston is out, but I have it and the rod, The GT heads were used for my stroker
motor. I have '87 S4 heads which were from a 17,000 mile engine but need cleanup
work. I have a set of S3 cams (not yet converted for S4 heads) that would work
well. Intake manifold for it and probably all the other stuff you'd need to get
it going. $1500 for the engine and related parts.

No shipping. Come pick it up.

interesting 90 S-4... no engine code I know of is 28/23? the K denotes 1989.and I would assume this is block 0002? 28/22 is a automatic Euro 84-86 engine (4.7liter)..and for example ..danglers is a F which makes it an 85..

Brendan , Yes..

Tom ,
When I bought it, I was told it was original intended
to be used as a boat motor ! ? go figure ..
It is definately a late model 32V S-4 type block , but
the numbers sure are screwy..
Thanks,

Joe, The surface and the letters seem a bit different from what I am used to. Are your sure they told you it was from a boat, and not Verboten?

Mike-

The font of the stamp #'s changed at some point ('87? paging Erkka.....)- Both my '90, the '91 stroker block and the GTS block have the same look as Joe's. As far as the broach marks on the stamp pad, it's hard to tell but it looks ok to me. It will be a good day in 928land when we have to start worrying about the veracity of the broached surface on 928 engine blocks the same way as the big block muscle car guys do......

91 GT stroker block:
