Kevin,

Yikes!! Somebody hacked into your account and changed your avatar. Find the scoundrel and get it back!

We look forward to seeing you again! We'll be heading south on 395 from Lee Vining Friday AM.

Cheers, Jim

Who else is heading out to Sharktoberfest from Arizona?

Not sure If I'll be in a convoy out or back - since it looks like I may bring my 2 boys (13 & 16) - they are keen to come - my oldest has asked if he can attand for the last 2 years (but I didn't even get to go) - Its fall break here and Mom's going to be on a week long cruise.

Likely I will drive out early (and do something fun with them before the event...)

Meanwhile I've got things going on every weekend and still need to get the car ready before then... My audio reinstall and Provent install finish up.

Is there a fun run planned for this year? If so, where, and what day?

Did I hear that Angeles Crest is now open clear through? Did it burn?

Angeles Crest Highway was still closed on Sunday morning. Caltrans is busy replacing guardrails and signs, per a recent news report. Metal posts to support the K-rail this time. Who'd believe that all those wood posts would burn?

Several years ago there was a mudslide in the eastern section of ACH, thanks to a fire followed by some rain. Road was closed at the top of 39 ever since. 39 itself was closed off a few years before that for slide damage supposedly. I think it's a conspiracy to prevent us from using the nicer driving roads in the area. I hope that the same fate doesn't come to any more of it. With crimped budhgets and reduced fuel sales tax revenues, there's an even bigger chance of this happening. The ski areas don't pay enough to maintain the highway, so it would be pretty easy to just close it at the Mt Wilson turn.

http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/sr2 gives up to date road condition reports for Angeles Crest Highway.

Looking up from where civilization ends in LCF, the area above into Angeles National Forest looks like a moonscape. With the predictions of a mild El Nino winter, it's possible that we will see slightly above-average rainfalls. All it will take is one hard rain to bring a lot of those slopes down onto the highway and potentially down the arroyo into Pasadena's back yard.

There's a news report of a huge wind-driven fire started this afternoon in Ventura County (Moorpark area?). Rob, that means it's headed towards the coast with the easterly winds. These gentle (<30MPH) Santa Ana winds managed to blanket the car with ash when I went to the dentist this afternoon. It's 100º right now, RH is less than 4%, and the wind is blowing. All it takes is one idiot.

I have not missed a Sharktoberfest yet but I have to work Saturday. If I get finished early enough, I will join you for dinner and blast back to Bako afterwards.

Saturday, October 17:

Wife on call- check.

Daughter soccer game 10AM: check.

Son soccer game 2 PM: check.

Daughter gymnastics meet 3PM: check.

Wife still on call all day Sunday too: check.

Hopefully there will still be gasoline when I have my weekends to myself again, in 2027......

RE: a fun run, William A and I have been brainstorming about drives- Sounds like Angeles Crest is going to be iffy. Rim of the World clockwise is a possibility, but we BTDT last year. Azusa to Claremont via Hwy 39 and then Glendora Ridge Road is another option, that was a nice drive at SF06, save for the red '86 that is grateful for 4' high earthen berms...... I suppose another option might be to head south down 15 to Palomar, but that's inconvenient for the NorCal crowd and would be 200+ miles round trip from Anaheim.

As far as drives go, hwy 18 to Lake Arrowhead is open, as well 330 up to Big Bear which is mountain driving....lots of curves which are fun in these sharks.

Alan, Rick

I am going to Sharktoberfest, I have been doing a few things to the car to prepare, it's had a few issues lately, switching to 4cyl mode a lot, but I think I have got that solved. I have hotel reservations so unless something comes up I am there.

Rob, we did RotW CCW last year, not CW. It's a nice drive, I wouldn't mind doing it again. As you say though, the further North we have lunch, the better it is for the NorCal'ers.
