We just used that approach to the car we just got. The ASKING price on the sticker was $4995.00, on line they wanted $3995.00 Then you add the dealer fees in Florida of another $450.00 to those numbers. The boss (wife) got the car for $3,700.00 in the trailer.
Leon wanted $4,000.00 to me for a car that he quoted $5,500.00 to a person he did not know, get the idea. Every time we take the Rolls someplace I get asked how much for the car I always say $35,000.00 when it will really take $24,000.00 to buy it. When you have a business with a collection attached to it you always get the advanced tire kickers but when someone REALLY wants to buy they will always counter offer your asking price.

I guess that is one way to negotiate.

Right now its a fact asking and getting prices are WIDE apart, and a few cars are selling at each end of the price range, so its hard to fault the high askers or low offerers.
The last 928 I was serious about started at $8k and worked its way down to $4k over two months, somebody bought it, and it was listed within a month for $12k, and again slowly dropped to about $5.5k then dropped off the market, maybe sold, maybe not.

Maybe it works for you but when I get a lowball offer, I usually tell them to take a hike. The lower the offer the more firm I'm with the price. If the offer is resonable, I'm game. If I'm asking $5500 for a car and a tire kicker comes in with a $3700 offer, I would, and have in the past, have no problem telling them to plese leave. Now if the buyer has a valid point and can convince me that the asking price is too high, I'll negotiate. But I won't stand lowballers.
By the way, I beleive the $3700 you paid for the '82 is not a bargain but a fair market price for that vehicle. I picked up a running '89 S4 last fall for less than that.
