If you like 944's, you will love 928's
I've owned both and still do... They are both great cars. Though once you drive a 928 for any length of time, the 944 feels lacking. Once you compare them, you'll see that where you used to have to shift down and keep if floored to do your business, now you will simply have to give it a little throttle and even show restraint. The power delivery on a well tuned 28 engine is intoxicating. Where the 944 feels ballanced and rotates perfectly in corners, the 928 does have some understeer. But as others have already said, larger fronts fixes this.
A stock 944 turbo can take a stock 928 0-60 no doubt.. but everywhere else it gets killed in the acceleration department. The 928 is geared higher for constant autobahn speeds. Throw on a supercharger, and it will make more power than a 944 could dream of making reliably without major surgery.
I used my latest 944 as a commuter for about a year. It is a fun car to drive, and it can get amazing gas mileage.. I'm talking 35-40mpg. hwy. The 928 on it's best day gets about 23mpg. hwy. Now it's my oldest daughters car and she is very happy.
With a diet, a stroker, and correct tires, a 928 becomes a weapon and absolutely dominates a racetrack. I recently went to the Callifornia Speedway with my kids and watched Mark Anderson kick a whole lot of new 911 ***.
BEWARE... Once you get bit by a 928, there is no going back....

Out-of-the-box? My personal pet opinion? Because the factory under-tired it on the front to make sure it couldn't castrate 911s on a track. If you do a little math it is easy to see that a stock 928 is under-tired for its weight as compared to a stock 911 or anything more-modern with a similar weight and architecture (like a C5 or C6 corvette.)

Yes and no here... remember Porsche did not have the intention of racing the 928 it was supposed to EAT the Autobahn's for lunch and every other car on them. That said, it had enough tire to do the job it was designed for and NOT create extra drag.
The problem is that HERE in the US we could not go 140-180 mph on the streets (well, not legally anyway) so going around corners was our only legal way to have fun... For THAT the car was/is WAY undertired! That said, the non-staggered early cars seem to be more evenly balanced to me than the later cars with wider rear track and rear tires... that is also shown by what is on track and how it is being used there.
Also the factory settings for the alignment are designed to be more numb and less involving so that too can be fixed and then you have a car like the big time 928 race cars that are out there! YEA BABY!
ROCK ON with a 928! It is the ONLY WAY to fly!

Craig, buy my DVD and watch it on the biggest TV in your house w/ the surround sound turned up loud and you will probably need a cold shower afterward! OMG is it AWESOME!
Special thanks here to Mark Anderson for letting me use much of his in car race video footage. I think I ended up giving you guys something like 9 minutes or maybe even 11 minutes of Mark SHREADING in his BEAST!

The Porsche guys get along well, try being a Corvette C4 owner in Off Topic at the Corvette Forum.
Many of the guys are just to fat to get into a C4 so they blame the car.

Alright, can I get some link to 928 sites? Parts, tuning, upgrades in general. I don't mean "paragon" .... are there sites with forced induction parts, or suspension parts that I wouldn't regularly see looking for my 944 stuff...
You guys have me thinking now..... lol.

I drove both pcars today. My '91GT and my '07GT3.
Different cars, but I don't expect to ever part with either of them. Both are a thrill to drive.
YMMV.
