as a side note. this is a 1000hour car build with the choice of any gear box and ratios possible. Funny they have the exact same shift points as the 2.2 rear end in the S4 with near 400rwhp. notice that gear spacing is the same and the key shift points are almost identical 3 gears used. (even though I think its a 6 speed too! )

at 33:00 he laps one of the top open cup cars that run in SP on Pirelli Slicks , passes the 500hp 1:35ish S2000 blower, and then you see me with my Hazards on limping around with no brakes!

what's your lap record there? I did a 1:30.00 flat once in a open-wheeled car, but that was in 1992 before they changed the pit lane length and re-profiled turns 10 and 11. I've never driven there since...

Are you sure you did a 1:30 in an open wheel car? thats near what the formula atlantic cars run (mid 1:20s). A formula Ford, for example will run 1:40 with a good driver. If you did it with a formula Mazda, those can do right around 1:30ish.

Anyway, my best is 1:37.5 with the new motor and 1:38.8 with the stock S4 motor. Anderson's best on slicks is 1:31, but he has 520rwhp vs my 365rwhp and has a little less weight than me.

I really admire you guys who take your cars to the track. I've been lucky enough to track my bikes. I feel I'm a much better driver than rider and only wish I could do what you do.

I'm sure a few of us wonder how much $$$ you spend each season to stay competitive.

What if I proposed a few of us socal guys go in together and start some type of "team"?
I'm saying we could find an older 928 for under 2500 bucks, gut it, spend what we can to keep it competitive in a more "economical" class and just have fun!

I'm serious about this and hope a few of you step up, maybe I should start a new topic?

Sorry if I high jacked this thread, I just have a lot of admiration for you guys, hopefully with some guidance, a few us could also get out there and fulfill our dreams...

If you do all the home work and build the car to what I have today, there is not much major to go wrong. Ive been pretty fortunate, but my season is really only about used tires (cheap) , gas, oil changes every 3 events and transmission oil every year along with brake pads and rotors. I bring most all the little things that can go wrong .(hoses, clamps, fuel pump, wheel bearings, etc) and so far, ive been pretty lucky, besides breaking my gear shift and related components during races , my blown brake line, and losing an alternator. (over 8 full racing seasons).

So, its generally, the cost of the entry fee and gas once a month.

The car I would recommend would be a gutted S4. why mess around with anything else. Its turn key and more than likely, it will be ready to go with only a clutch upgrade (dual disc conversion and some headers). sure, wheels and tires , suspension kit and weld in a cage set the alignement to known values and off you go to the races. I was competitve my first outing out with building the Holbert machine, and it has been driven to the track to almost all races.

Anyway, love to have more of the 928s raced up here , but that isnt going to happen until Brian gets his racing license for him and the "widow".

Right now, im serching for sponsorship so I can finish out the season, so if you know anyone,or a business, let me know!

Hey, guys that know me, know I dont mess with any thing that often. the car is set up like the day i converted it. I have only washed the thing and bolted on those brake lines since my last race. It is one of the craziest set ups as far as lack of work in the racing world. and, I do all my races basically alone. no help what so ever. I cant imagine what it will feel like to get a hot tire pressure in the hot pits some day soon! I dont think you can do as much as you can with the 928 in near stock form. (no radical chassis or engine upgrades at all)

The Holbert car with its original engine and a set of headers , ran 1:39.xx every weekend we were there for years! If you look at the cars I competed against and their support and effort, it makes you laugh! thats probably is what makes racing the 928 out there so fun. just jump in and go.

Hey Mark, isn't this a contradiction?

BTW, just wanted to say I love watching your videos, even if the one-handed cornering makes me glad I'm not next to you.

And that NSX is a beast, but in the video it really seems like a point-n-shoot car. He's not pushing it at all in most corners, just backing off and driving through the turn before putting the power down again. Granted, that's apparently all he has to do but it sure looks like that car is capable of a LOT more.

Speed is money, how fast do you want to go? Where I was mid pack in our "team" last year, this year I'm getting annihalated by money. GTR's, 580 hp vettes, vipers and such. Mark, I feel your pain for sponsorship.

At least I look cool getting passed by money. But I did buy a 928 for what it is, beautiful, classic and useable. It's still a labor of love and time will get me up to speed....anyone have a free supercharger setup?...

That NSX has some serious $$$ invested in it...that plus a good driver is why its so fast....think about it...a 1000 hour build @ $100 per hour labor...is $100k plus parts....OUCH

As for cheap 928 race cars....it can be done pretty easy and you end up with a good race car that you will have lots of fun in...sure it won't be the "best" 928 race car...but you can gut an OB, get a Euro motor with a 5.0L bottom end and make 300whp in a 2600lb race car fairly inexpensively..... Sure its not "miata cheap" in terms of fun per $$...but nothing can touch miatas for that....
