The un-official lap record is around 1:31 and change with non other than Mario Andretti at the helm.
Fun things happen when you remove the boost restrictor on a Cosworth and lay down the wings.
For comparison, Mark Anderson's lap record is 2:17:XX

No, you still need money to pay for gas and entry.
by the way, Ive delt with for years a bum linkage. Its why you see my hand resting on the gear lever. I dont think you see that as much, but there still is one more part broken on the gear lever mechanism that i keep a hand on occasionally.
Almost fixed as of this video. (the bottom pivot is completely broken inside the hole still) And by the way, those that race with me have no problem being along side. Well, except Rylan.

as far as the NSX, most fast drivers make the car look like it is not being pushed. If you watched it, you can see it breaking loose occasionally. you dont run 1:30 at laguna and not push your car. Not many others have driven a car like this to this kind of speeds. Remember this guy is running tenths of a second within times that Billy Johnson ran in a similar NSX. He is a new pro with a pretty fast track record running Grand Am and breaking records in the Time Attack events.
It might look like Kip is leaving room on each turn, but he is not. Those are 225 sized front DOT tires!
Did you see Andersons video from '99 running a 1:40.1 on DOTs and his 420rwhp. Now he runs 1:31 on big slicks and 520hp. Im sure with as much as the NSX, he would beat it!

And that NSX is a beast, but in the video it really seems like a point-n-shoot car. He's not pushing it at all in most corners, just backing off and driving through the turn before putting the power down again. Granted, that's apparently all he has to do but it sure looks like that car is capable of a LOT more.

Did you see his "reality times". This guy has NO driving ability. Heck, I was able to run a stock 928 (euro stock) to a 1:45 with only 4th gear, and recently no brakes to a 1:48 . I love his voice though. He does a good job with the hype car show.
A 1:57!!! . I loved the part when he came in the pits and the brakes were smoking.

Personally, I only managed a 1:30:02 one time, and one time only. My average was more like 1:32:00. Again, this was when the track was shorter, too. You could carry a lot more speed through turn 10 at that time.
If a tin-top 928 is getting into the 1:30s now that's damn impressive. Must be fun...

Yep, formula mazda or star mazda is right in the 1:30s now. sure,its a ball park. That still is getting around the track real fast! Nice.
The track is actually about 1 second faster now, due to the new pavement in '06 and a slight flattening of the entrance to the corkscrew, but it is near the same track.
Anderson running 1:31s with slicks was a sight to behold, especially with the 700hp turbo 911 in tow!

Yes, I'm sure. It was a formula mazda. '30 flat was the time everybody tried to get down to or beat - if you could do that you were officially "quick." Most of the really talented guys could sometimes touch 1:29 and IIRC the record for a FM was 1:28:something. The atlantic cars back then were in the low 1:20s which is a lot faster.

I worked at the Russell Racing School which was there at the time (before they moved up to Sears) and Memo Gidley (of later minor Atlantic and Indy Car fame) was one of the other mechanics I worked with. He could flat turn ten and was much quicker than any of the other guys there at the garage - and could also outrun the instructors too.

I didnt know that about turn 11 and the extended pit row.
Anyway, we will be at laguna for another pretty large event. the Nw porsches will be coming down again, so the fields should be packed. first weekend in sept if I remember.

Sure, but in 91-92 the pit lane was significantly shorter and turn 11 was more of a 90-degree bend than the tighter kink it is now, and turn 10 was also less tight -- sometime in the late '90s they lengthened the pit lane to make more room for FIM and IndyCar teams and the extended front straight backed turn 11 up to the north and also tightened up turn 10 to meet the new 11. With the old layout in a formula mazda, a brave and/or very highly skilled driver (not me) could flat turn 10 - I only tired once and proceeded to spin off the outside across the pit entrance and nearly hit the wall. I never tried that again...

Worth mentioning that POC has a noise limit at Laguna 92dbA @ 50 feet which really cuts the horsepower as they must run mufflers ! The turbo cars seem to get hurt the most....

That is splitting hairs for two reasons. that was one lap, in one race 3 years ago when the track was brand new. Sorry, didnt mean to rip you off that .152 seconds. . Last year, you were still a very fast 1:31.xx. I want to see you race this NSX in Sept!!!! Can you go?????
I was at that race, it was a cool race to watch. as a note, Mark also did it with stock exhaust system and a soup can over the very end to reduce noise even further.

Quiet ? Nope not the race versions and they do not need back pressure behind the turbo ! Plus the big 6.5 liter makes loads of Torque. The 92 db is really very quiet some 911s make so much INTAKE noise that they get black flagged for that ! You would not believe all the pipes and mufflers that people hang on the cars to try to keep the noise down.
