Default Quick Check Please ... 8" Euro H4?

A local party is selling a set of new "Bosch 8" Euro H4" headlamps for $250. I am thinking of purchasing the set to replace my existing 7" H4 E-codes (with the chrome rings).

Unfortunately, I do not have the part # for the Bosch 8" Euros. Perhaps someone with experience on 928 headlights can chime in....

Is it an easy swop of the 7" H4 E-codes with the 8" H4 Euros on my 84 928s?

Thanks in advance for any advice which you can give me!

This H4 thread should give you the specific answers you need regarding fit up.
Generally yes, they will work.

I would jump on those at $250/set.

When I did the swap it was very easy. The old lights mounted with 6mm bolts, the new ones required 6mm nuts so I picked up 4 6mm nylock nuts and 4 6mm flat washers.

Make sure the lights you intend to buy are for LHD. LHD lights will have the "Wedge" feature of the lens visible on the driver's side of the lens.

$250 is a screamin' deal if they are really like new. Beware, the reflectors corrode and peel if they have not been sealed and water found its way in.

part numbers

The Euro lights have the fitting on them to use for the hydraulic height system, other here have made these work without much difficulty.
Euro set
928 631 101 03 = Left...
928 631 102 01 = Right
For the USA
928 631 101 03 = Left and right

Very easy for you - the connectors are even the same.

If you have real 7" H4's and not sealed beam units - sell them to someone - its still a very nice upgrade over the 7" sealed beam DOT crap. However your car was not delivered with these - so someone would have had to have upgraded already for it to be wearing these...?

If its just the sealed beams (no sepreate bulb) - throw them away they are worthless

Stan the fitting for the adjuster is the same as on USA models (USA just has the dummy fixed adjuster post in the headlight yoke - not an issue)

Thanks for your quick comments!

The seller mentioned this set of headlights has the provision for the 5 Watt "city light". Do you know the purpose of this option? I was wondering if the electrical connections may be different especially at the harness/socket end?

I think he is mistaken... it does look this way but none of the Bosch H4's I have seen are fully equipped for it (only the outer seal plate has the extra terminal required).

If he has pictures of what he means that would be interesting.

Its basically just a marker light (low intensity) in the headlight so you are more visible - without acually throwing any light (assuming street lights are bright enough) - its lower glare - but not terribly useful unless the vehicle has no other front facing marker lights.

Thanks for the insight Alan.

This is the current 7" H4 E-code which I am using in my 84.... defintely a great improvement over the sealed beams:

http://www.rennbay.com/ecode-hella-h...77fd343f885ad4

I do like the E-code pattern on the 7"s (i.e., sharper beam cut0ff pattern) .... which I believe also comes with these 8" Euros.

I've often wondered about this as my car has 7" chrome-ringed H4's and it's a USA car. I have pretty good records for the car but nothing about changing the headlights. Any chance the dealers ever did this? My car has only 2 P.O's and one of them only had the car about a month. Given that the first guy never drove the car but kept good records it seems weird to me that he would have changed out the headlights....

Andrew,

I was eyeing those too, but I mean to put projectors in my new '85.

(BTW: Don't tell Joe F., they are right near his house!)

The newer 8" H4s with the rear seal plate are wired, and have a socket for the city light (turn off headlights in Austrian towns), but all the ones I've seen have not been drilled through the (steel) reflector for them.

It would be cool if they were drilled.

Hi Ken,

How have you been buddy?

Did you not put projectors in your other car? It looks like a fun project.

Unless Joe F has supercharged his baby and makes it there faster than me.... no worries.... I am meeting my H4 benefactor in 1/2 hour to get the headlamps from him

By the way, I may be going on my first Arrive-N-Drive PCA Portland event this Sat. Wanna come along for the fun?

Thanks to everyone for your quick replies! I love Rennlist!

The H4 expedition was successful. I met the seller and purchased it from him an hour ago. He was going to install them on his VW bus project, but unfortunately, he decided to scrap the project.

Everyone's comments about the non-necessity of the "4th prong" and "city light" makes sense to me now that I have the actual product in my hands. I took a couple of pics and documented them below to help other Rennlisters visualize the above discussion points for future reference.

Thanks again to all!

I have noticed a curiosity on the 8" lens here in Oz. My car is an 83 C16 (UK spec) car, and its 8" lenses are plain round on the outside, but almost all the Oz delivered units I have seen have a small bump at the top of the glass maybe 10mm high, softly curved over 25mm. This is visible above the light body from the inside of the car, enabling the driver to see if the light is lit or not. Anybody know the origin of these tell-tales, which country mandated them? In the 30s and 40s many English cars had such tell-tales in the form of small red lenses on the top of external light housings.

Both types (with without nipples) exist here in the USA too (all LHD). Not sure why they are different - my new Bosch H4s had them - other have said their new H4s did not have them. I guess Hella makes H4s too - not sure if its the Hella's that don't have them. They work just as you'd expect and are quite functional.

I think a long time ago headlights gave out so little light that the only way you knew they were actually on was to have the little "tell tales" - especially if it was a full moon... Not so the H4's

Alan, hadnt thought about not being able to tell if on or not other than tell tale, except with some Chebby lights. My K1500(?) Blazer had 4 rectangular lights - to get a useful high beam I had to couple low->high with relays and diodes.
Best lights I have ever driven was Rover P6 - 2 x 5.5" high beams @75W each + 2x 5.5" @ 75/50W. On high it used all 6 filaments totalling 400W IIRC.
