I modify the Stable mount so it sits lower and almost to the floor. It give the passenger more leg room.

Just not sure between the flat black or gloss black.
They are very nice units. I fondled a couple of the display units when I went to their office to pick up my bracket. I would have bought one had I seen them before I bought the Amerix that I have. I've been thinking lately that I'd like to have the extra margin of the Halon, and seeing another 928 burn clinched it(in more ways than one).

Yes, or just hit it with a sharpie.

That came out really nice. I had to lower mine too, but did it a bit differently. The mount for manual seats is quite a bit different from yours.

Dave I quite like the ones you showed - if they did the matt black one with a black anodized top & mount (and of course a matt black hose fitted) it would be a killer stealth look!

I'm having second thoughts about the black. I go way out of my way to avoid parking in the sun, but I have to wonder how much more a black one would heat up in a black/black car, and whether that's an issue. I'll ask about that when I call them.

Dave,

I think I have it covered...

My extinguisher is black in a black/black car too. Since mine lives on the "face of the sun" - I think you are fine in San Jose! Mine is actually a 2.5lb amerex halon - the Safecraft should be similar volume and therefore similar pressure differential. In fact the pressure doesn't seem to change much depending on temperature...

I just like it not to be too obtrusive.

I like the low profile approach. Don't you have tinted windows all around? That's got to help some.

I need to pick one of these up for the shark soon. Thanks for all the great info.

Oh and not trying to play devils advocate but the whole Halon / Halotron debate bugs me. What is worse for the atmospher, a burning car or using halon? If Halotron isn't as effective and doesn't get the job done it is pointless. Granted I haven't tried either and I hope I never have to but I had to make a comment about it.

Actually, it would be easy enough to make a leather cover that would attach to the canister without hampering it's function, and still match the rest of the interior.

I do not know if it would be the same effect with a loose bottle in a car especialy with the windows rolled up but another good reason to have it secured and not loose rolling around.
I had a similar experience - in a Halon equipped very large computer operation room at Intel.

It consisted of several mainframes, lots of mini computers and a bunch of IC component testers - about 30,000 sq feet. The doors all had card readers and release buttons to get out. Mounted about 3 feet from the door release button was the "Big Red Button" mounted inside a protective ring... it was pretty obviously marked.

But of course one day someone pressed that button instead of the door release.

Instant shutdown of all the equipment, switch to emergency red lighting, released a cloud of halon (not a great day for the environment) and all the sirens and flashers go off while the pre-recorded emergency evacuation messages tells you to GET OUT RIGHT NOW!...

...It sounded like world war III.

Everyone got out quickly - but its wierd - you breathe pretty easily but just don't get much oxygen... got to move fast...

Alan, I just talked to the guy at SafeCraft. As I guessed, he would have to wait for the next batch from the machine shop to do black ano. He's guessing that might be 6 months from now -- he does extremely large batches to keep the price down.

My guess on the prices wasn't so good -- I assumed the extinguisher cost would be the cost of both minus the cost of the bracket but it seems there is about a $50 break when you buy them both together. The matte black version is $210(same for all the painted versions), the polished stainless is $232.

I know for a fact that your Amerix mounting hoops will not work without modification on the SafeCraft extinguisher(maybe you could shim it somehow). The SC unit is 3" diameter.

Dave,
I'm actually OK with the Amerex. I'd have considered the Safecraft as a more attractive alternative... I actually had a halon unit in the car before the Amerex and it too was a 3" cylinder - the Brey Krause mount doesn't come in that size... (hence the Amerex)... so now my truck is also halon protected as a result.

Nicole - below are some more Photos:
You can see the extinguisher is quite low down and the mount touches the front of the seat. I tried various locations - it is possible to get it closer to the seat above the bump - but its more comfortable lower. The extinguisher is mounted a little to to the left of center of the seat for better entry/exit. also for easier driver reach and to keep the guage and mechanism tucked away - the actuator handle is rotated to the front and held flush with a big (loose) o-ring. The hose is clipped on with plastic cable clamps cut to only 300 degree open loops (hose just pulls out).

Just an update to an older, but still important thread.

Finally got my Brey-Krause extinguisher mount (SITM '09 door prize) into the starting rotation.
I was going to order a SafeCraft 2.5 lb Halon extinguisher but the damn $375 price made me punt.
Lucky for me, I found one on eBay for $175 shipped (less than a year old), can't lose there.

Got it mounted up and it looks and works nicely with the SafeCraft quick release bracket.

However, I like Alan's Brey-Krause CNC bracket better, so I'll probably switch out to that model later on. Alan, which model is that you have?

Dave - I fabricated the mounting bracket myself - only the quick release & extinguisher mount are from BK - I am unimprssed with all their seat rail mounts...

Yeah, that rail mount is kinda large looking when installed and limits seat movement. They do have an adapter plate that will give you 2.5" more movement though.

This completely misses the point though... why connect the extinguisher to the fixed seat rails vs the movable seat? the only reason I can see is that some seat rails aren't strong enough alone... however on a 928 the seatbelt mount is attached to the moveable seat - so the extinguisher certainly should be too!

Stable Energies has a better movable seat mount - but it still needs some adaptation - I decided to just make my own for beter optimization - but you have to use heavy duty hardware & build it well.
