BTW - I do also have a secondary mount for the extinguisher to go on the passenger rear bulkhead - under the rear passenger side seat as an alternate location. I just haven't quite mounted it yet... The idea is that I'd relocate the extinguisher for long trips with a passenger for slightly better comfort). In the case of a rear seat passenger also - it must be located in the front. Its surprisingly not much of an impediment to the front passenger. Its rather easier to reach in the front footwell than in the rear so thats where it normally lives - though both are within driver reach.
My extinguisher also has a hose & fitting to allow better aiming and also connection to my engine compartment direct Halon distribution system.
The extinguisher mount is a Brey-Krause CNC custom machined quick release part ($$$$) but very well done - I love it!

Dean: I'm terribly sorry to hear this! Hope you can clean it up well - but don't be surprised, if you keep finding this dust for years to come, in places you don't usually reach.
Alan: I like the position of your fire extinguisher, but your picture reminds me of why I am uncomfortable with most of them: They have sharp edges that could injure your passenger in case of an accident.
I've been criticized for saying this before, and know that most people don't care. I have been in a rollover in a 911, and despite being buckled-up, I hit the radio with my knee, and something unknown with my left wrist. I still have the scars to prove it - 25 years after it happened. The forces in an accident are so great - you have no control over where your limbs swing, or how far they depress your seat. The resulting injuries could be prevented easily, if someone would just put a bit more effort into designing these things without sharp edges.
I wish they would make a Halon or Halotron extinguisher with a more ergonomic user interface.

Dean I was driving behind a friend years ago here in the Seattle area and I thought his engine had exploded ... all I could see, was white "smoke" filling his cockpit VERY rapidly. Thankfully he and you were in a position to pull over safely. His interior I think took many man hour days to clean. Inside the air vents etc.

Thank God you were at a place where you could pull off. Never heard of this happening. I wonder if it was the difference in air-pressure/elevation or something?

Since the rear seats don't seem to get used much, it might be good to see if a mount could be built or adapted to mount to the seat rails like the Stable Energies one, only behind the passenger seat. That would greatly reduce the risk of anyone getting injured by it in a rollover, as Nicole pointed out.
I initially had one mounted between the drivers seat and the door, but getting over the handle/nozzle to get in and out of the car was a huge hassle so it didn't stay there very long.

Glad I won the Stable Energies fire extinguisher bracket door prize at SITM!!
Just look on the bright side-your car,s a lot less flammable after being 'treated'

I'm going to have at least two 2.5 lb canisters. One in front of the passenger seat, the other behind it somewhere. Both the passenger seat and rear seats see little use in my 928, so I'm not too concerned about access for now.

It depends entirely on the active agent of the extinguisher - dry powder, halon, halotron, CO2, foam are all different in level of effectiveness per volume...
Thoughts:
1) Personally I'd say don't use dry powder on your 928 - its not the most effective method (due to access issues) and leaves a tremendous mess...
2) How you are going to get the active agent to the source of the fire? Consider a Central Electric panel fire (try your extinguisher for aiming...!) - Consider an underhood fire - how will you attack it... BTW opening the hood is not the smartest way to go about this (think about it).
3) How easy is it to access the extinguisher from the drivers seat - both reach & ease of use of the release mechanism.
4) How obtrusive is the extinguisher - visually, from an occupant comfort perspective, from a occupant safety perspective, from an equipment functionality perspective (e.g. full seat operation - etc)
5) How secure is the mounting - could it become projectile in case of a high impact accident..
I have never seen one - but you could make one (see mine above) - but ensure its very robustly built... however in the rear even with a low profile mount like mine and the extingisher removed it will still compromise rear foot room. Mounting below the rear seat may be better if you have a very low profile mount...

I saw the Dean's wanton desire for that bracket, so I told Jeanie that it didn't matter when she ask what I wanted. My 4 yr old son was asleep in my lap and my 7 yr old went up to the table for the prize. But him being instinctively attracted to more expensive items, quickly grabbed the bracket and beat a hasty retreat. I guess it was fate anyway since Dean didn't even have his ticket called.
Where is a good source (i.e. PRICE) for the 2.5 lb halon fire extinguishers?
