Being an S4 engine, it'll be something like with M28/4x 81 J 00123

the x tells you if the car was manual or auto.

The second letter (J above) corresponds to the model year, and matches the model-year letter in the VIN. So H is 87, J is 88, K is 89 etc.

Should be M28/12 instead of M2M/12, I guess.

SharkSkin,
I checked the link you provided and didn't see my # in there ?
Any thoughts as to where else I could check to get confirmation.
FWIW, When I bought the bare block to use for a stroker project, I
was told that it was originaly intended to be used as a boat motor.
Thanks for any input..

M28/23? Very strange. Nothing is listed in PET.
By "bare block" I assume you mean that the crank, rods and pistons were not included. What is the diameter of the bores?

Weird.. must be something interesting going on there.

The K indicates its a MY '89 engine.

Hopefully Rixter or Erkka will pop up in this thread as they're the most likely to be able to shed any light on the engine series number.

If its a marine block, would be interesting to see what's different on it, as those were turbo'd engines and would possibly have Porsche's intended turbo modifications (e.g. oil squirters?).

It'd also explain why the engine number is so low.

Ben,
Yes only the bare block. It had been bored to 103.8 when I got it and still needed to be nicksiled. It was supposedly used at some point for a total of
3K miles (total from new) in a car then removed to be turned into a stroker
project that got canceled, thats where I came in..
It now has a 108.86 bore X 93.98 stroke

Mark,
I don't think so, but only because of what I had been told about it being
originally intended for the off shore boat guys ? Maybe Porsche has a whole
different set of part number's for boat motors ? beats me..

Xlot,
Weird for sure ! I didn't know "K" indicated 89 yr-mdl, Thanks for that.
When I was shopping for a block, way back then, I wasn't up on the engine
I.D. coding but just wanted to make sure it was of the S4 family of blocks
not the S3's . The first thing I checked when i got it was to see if it had
the squirter's (NO) so I at least figured it was an 88 mdl yr, now it appearers
to be a 89. As far as being different, it isn't, at least when Todd ( Wisconsin)
was working on it he didn't see or notice anything out of the ordinary other
than the fact that it was an extremely low mileage/hour block. I had been
looking for a low mileage block to use for the project, one that had as little
as possible metal fatigue on it. So when this one came along advertised as
only having 3K miles on it, I jumped on it and didn't pay to much attention to
the I.D. #, just wanted to make sure it was a S4 type and in good condition.
I guess it's appropriate that it's a bastard block because it's now definitely
a bastard/boostered motor that it's been turned into

If it really is M28/12, then it's Euro S 80-83 (4.7 16v 300hp engine), which came with 3-speed auto.
