You will not get the results with cutting the stock part. I did this years ago and thought it felt ok and that must be all there was to it. The spacing is way different with the 928 int. short shifter and the geometry is what causes the total redefining of the shifting experience. I removed my cut off stock shift lever today and installed this piece and it is magnificent and eons better than cutting the stock one. Look at the pic!

In fact, I'll go one better and say before going short shifter make sure the shifter cup and aft coupler are in good shape. Otherwise it'll be even harder to find gears. You only have so much hand control and a shorter shifter, and especially with the wider connection, makes the needed accuracy higher.

BTW - for the later shifter the spacing of the commercial short shifter is the same as a early handle. If you want to, you can get an early shifter and cut it down for an S4. Voila! Just what they're selling.

It's a needed mod and a solid approach for people tired of throwing $50s under the car.

I painted mine red, too.

At only $70-$80 it is not expensive to buy the real short shifter. This talk of modding the oem is ridiculous.

That's my opinion.

I can do this mod in 15 minutes and it's not worth $70?

Can I stay at your Caribbean hideaway?

FWIW I did all of this: short shift, new bushings (4), new front cup (928 motorsports), new rear coupler, adjusted clutch properly. For anyone rehabbing their shifter all of the above is a must and makes a night and day difference. Also replaced both clutch master and slave and bled properly, which also made a difference. The older transmission is still a little notchy, but so tight and precise now, huge difference.

How are you drilling and rewelding the shifter attachment point of the stock shifter to spread them apart to approximate the short shifter product geometry or are you getting the OB 78-79 broom handle shifter to cut down.
The broom handle shifter from the early cars have the further apart shift attachment points of the commercial short shifter.

I wouldn't use a short shifter on the gearboxes with the older style syncros....unless the syncros are "well worn" in. You almost can't shift an older car with newer syncros and a short shifter.

That's basically what I have. Rebuilt older-style 928intl gearbox with <5k miles on it, short shifter and all the stuff I listed above. Yes it's stiff but very positive and I've grown to like it.

Oh, earnestly, you know I didn't do that.

Now that you mention it, it might have had the full broom. My car was built in 9/79 and had some other non-80 parts on it.

How's this: mine is cut to a custom height that is optimal for me. How much would that cost to have made?

True. That's what I did:
Morphing a 1980 Broomhandle into a Short Throw Short Shifter

The comparison pics are gone from the thread (old host), but the attachment points of the early stock shifters have 35mm spacing while the later shifters have 25mm. The early shifter creates a shorter throw on a later car. Cut the shifter handle shorter and it becomes a short throw short shifter.

'78-84 and '85-91 versions side by side with short shifters for each.

From left to right '85-90 stock version, '91-95 stock and '85-95 short shifter.

Thanks for the pics and links, guys. A little way-back machine ride there. My ISP (Earthlink) tossed all my pics a while back. (B*tards)

Reminds me of another good DIY idea for this: Move the lower tube up to be the higher tube. A bit more work to cut off the bottom, remove the tube, drill the new hole and weld it in. It does avoid cutting and shaping the top and then you can put the tubes further apart.
