TBF carnage photos
Well, I finally pulled the pan off the original engine just to look. We knew it was bad. The thrust bearing is pretty much gone at the rear. The crank obviously got really HOT. The sensor posts on the flywheel machined into the bellhousing... I threw a dial on there just to see what the final crank movement reading was. Greg just said "it's a LOT. You could hear it move in the office from the shop floor" It looks like about .049(1.2446mm)!!! WSM tollerance limits are .004 to .015" (.1 to .4 mm) Just a tad out of limits I'd say!
It's a wonder it ran at all.

When I released the tension on the flexplate the car sprung forward almost 3 feet! (not really) It was loaded up fully though. The flexplate couldn't get any further forward I don't think. Manuals eat the thrust bearing from the other side, but at a very, very slow rate. (unless there is a problem, or aftermarket clutch that is not set up right) The po thought there was an ignition problem. Obviously, this had been going on for a very long time. It even went to a Porsche shop locally where it got a new starter, hoses, rotors and caps. Goes to show you how ignorant some Porsche mechanics are regarding the 928. I didn't have a PPI done. I figured even if there was a major problem, $1000 spent is not so bad. I had the extra special API (After Purchase Inspection) done. (much more rewarding that way)...

OK, I'm going to say it. I don't see anything except the results on the dial indicator. What am I looking at?
When you say carnage, I think of the grenaded rods that were in the other thread a few days ago with parts missing and holes blown through the oil pan.
On this one, I'm only seeing a lot of play where the main bearings should be holding things in place.
Someone tell me what I'm looking at?

The crank is black from friction where it grinds against the block. You can also see the grooves grind into the block.
I'm not sure however why the block is scrap. Wouldn't an oversize bearing work?
