Default How concerned should I be about this? (Welded Caliper Brackets)

I recently picked up a 928 that was a former PCA track car with caliper mounts that are welded to the spindle. Apparently someone swapped over S4 calipers but not S4 spindles and instead welded bolt mounts to the existing OB spindles.

According to the log book it hasn’t raced in a PCA sanctioned event since the late 90’s so I don’t know if this brake upgrade was done before or after its career as a club racer. Either way, I’d hate to break a weld going into turn 1 at Summit with these cleverly modified spindles I have here. Ever seen anything like this? Thoughts?

The cage in this car is so nice... then I find this. I might be in the market for some S4 spindles...

Well if it held for this long, maybe it will hold a little longer. Can you contact the owner and ask when the brakes were fitted?

Not to mention a bit of stress. I too would opt for the OE spindles.

Those are oxidation rotors, even more stopping power than ceramic

If you opt to keep the spindles, you should have them checked for stress fractures. For my '59 Elva restoration project, I had ALL the suspension components magnafluxed. Any parts with cracks were replaced - it's not worth the risk - especially for a track car.

Ah, yes, the new ferric oxide treatment!

Judging from the pic it would appear that they were TIG welded on. But really as to how good they are depends on the prep work, and capability of the welder

A good welder could add them and you would never have to worry about it.

All good input. I have to believe that these S4 calipers were added during the race car prep and that they held all this time - but I still worry about capilers that aren't attached by more traditional means. Maybe I should just have material added by a profressional.

Chances are that those WERE welded on by a pro, I don't recomend adding any more material to it. Who knows what the original welding rod was. Either keep them the way they are or get the proper spindels but whatever you do, do not re-weld them.

You could take them off and have an INDT tech go over them. He will be able to tell you if they are good or crap.

Your should probably just replace them. Think how stupid you will feel if you don't and then they fail.

That's not something I would even consider gambling with. Sometimes people even give away the S4 spindles, but for $100-?, you could potentially save your car from being totalled or worse. Every time you come down the straight and slam on the brakes, you'll be thinking about it.
