Question Wheel Repair Specialists in Bay Area

I have a bent 9" x 17" Cup 1 chrome wheel that needs repair. Does anyone know of any local sources who do great work in the SF Bay Area?

Riteway Wheel - Alpine Road, Walnut Creek. Talk to Sharon or Jose.

They have fixed both 1 piece and multi piece wheels for me.

$0.02

I have a crack running from the inside rim edge and down about three inches. Would you recommend a repair (it's the track car) or do I start looking for wheels?

I know you asked Jim, but I'd say no, especially if you are running extra-sticky tires. OTOH, it couldn't hurt to ask some of the vendors mentioned above what they think of the idea. They are the ones with the most experience... see if you can find a consensus.

Charley:

FWIW, I have had Jose weld a couple of wheels with good result.

A lot depends on the alloy of the wheel and how the crack came to be.

Is this an OEM wheel or aftermarket ? Basic thought here is whether or not the wheel is certified DOT, TUV, etc. and many of the certs require casting the ID of the alloy, at least for the hub (multipiece).

If you can get a replacement wheel, it's probably best to get a replacement for primary use. However, if the wheel is repairable, it gives you a spare.

There doesn't appear to be any impact damage to the wheel so I'm not sure what caused the crack. I had the tires replaced recently and i'm wondering if the tire shop didn't leave their mark.

They are a 8 or 10 year old three piece alloy wheel that I'm not at all confident I can find a replacement for. Guess I'll have a chat with the repair shops and see what they say.

ok.... apparently it's going to cost $500 shipped for another chrome Cup 1 for the rear of my car. Can a price to fix it be more than that? Jeez! I could get another set of wheels for that price!

Andy, the place I mentioned does work on a first-come, first-served "while you wait" basis on Saturdays -- call them for details. This may not include chrome work, but you can ask.

I called them up. I'll be driving to Santa Clara next weekend. Thanks for the referral!

bad news. I just found out the front wheel is bent too. I think I am just going to get a set of new wheels. There are some late model 986 Boxster wheels on ebay for $400. Time to start saving...

I'm looking at these Boxster wheels.... they are 7" x 17" in the front with a 55mm offset and 8.5" x 17" in the rear with a 48mm offset. I think these will fit fine, correct?
