My local powder coater just doesn't care anymore....anybody found a good powder coater that can do the valve covers and intake? Has anybody actually found someone that can make it the original color?
There is a company advertising on a billboard off the 55 freeway and Dyer that is local. My photographer had his wheels done by them and they looked great. Don't know if they can match color though. I will try and get their info and pass it along.
Greg, I have a trusted place down here - well, in escondido. I know the place very well- and I know they do good work. The pictures of the rear assembly on my 78 in my assembly thread is a good example. I just dropped off a ton more stuff today.
On the "original color" idea, I don't know. I do know they would be happy to help you.
Olympic Coatings. The lady there, Merideth, knows me by name. The owner's name escapes me right now, but he looks like santa.
This place is ok & they do that new dull finsh silver header coating called
"titanium" (see pic)
As far as the pt code goes you may have to go a automotive pt supply house
like ( Senik Paint ) in Costa Mesa. They can color match anything ! then with
Seniks pt # you could go back to Embee with the color identifed and start an
account with them and have your specific colors on file so when you sent stuff
to them you just reference your "spec" color code. Embee is a Mil-Spec plater
they know what true quality is.

I also used Olympic Coatings recently for the first time. Intake, cam covers, thermostat housing, oil filler neck, cross brace, and about 60 bolts and washers for about $250. I think they did a great job although I did need to do some clean up on the mating surfaces. Took about 4 weeks. I will use them again.

Greg, what IS the original color? Most that I've seen are somewhere between silver and gold, did they start out as pure silver?

This is a good ??? I think the original color was a shade of silver...with variation along the way....in some 928's this ends up looking almost tan with age.....it just depends, since in some it flakes off altogether... Sharkys looks great & the widow is UGLY
another idea, just spray it. This color from "Duplicolor" pt # ET0367000
The name they call it is " Light Almond Pearl "
It is very close to the oem 928 mtr color
Paint looks nice, but powder coating is much more durable. The only thing I've found that it doesn't like so far is brake cleaner. And even with that if you let it dry, the powder coat hardens back up.
At the risk of 'my' plating place already being 'your' plating place, I had good luck with http://www.ocplating.com/ 990 North Parker, Orange, 714 771-1510.
They did my intake in 'chrome silver' and polished my thermostat housing in July 07 for $120. 5 day turnaround. Still looks good, nearly 2500 miles later. The silver is a little darker than Zermatt silver but it's pretty close. (The PO had had the valve covers (and only the valve covers) done somehere else.
The NEW S-4 intake which we had in stock was SILVER.....the new 85-86 engines we bought were silver. Dewayne has a "new" 86 Porsche school engine that I found for him , maybe he can take a look at it. The silver turns gold with heat even darker when one burns ! My vote is silver with no gold or tan mixed in.
That titanium looks stunning. I've been trying to decide on color for my intake/cam covers when I pull them and was leaning toward as close to the orignal ( as far as I can tell) champagne as possible ( although black and silver/chrome are appealing), but now the titanium is is a front runner.
One big factor for me is how it will look in a year and how hard it is to keep clean. For me, no point in making it look great if every little smudge shows like a beacon. Although I enjoy cleaning the car, there are plenty of other things I can do with that time.....
