Anyone know of an online vendor that sells them?

Hi,
I sell the "Performance Y" pipe for the older cars - 79 to 84.
Will fit a 78 but you need to remove the cross bracket.
Aluminized steel is $380 plus $50 for an install kit. In stock and ready to ship.

Roger,

Just to be certain of your solution. This will eliminate the single cat?

Yes that is correct and it adds some extra horse power and sounds a little deeper. Have it on my own 78 and two 79's.

I got one from Roger last year and love it. I am using just the pumpkin and no cat or resonators. Sounds great and gave it a little more throttle response.

I made a set for a local 928 guy last night. $100 in SS pipe and mandrel bends, $80 in clamps, and 5 hours of my time.

I was eyeballing these -- appears to be the Motorsports unit (Dave, not Carl). Is there a Y-pipe available that doesn't require removal of the front cross brace, AND allows access to the clutch?

I think this one does, at least the clutch part.

I have one of these pipes from Roger had to drop mine to get at my clutch. IIRC there was one stubborn bolt on the inspection cover that you couldn't get a wrench on due to the wider pipes coming off this Y that is not obscured with the stock pipes. Of course, it only takes about 5 minutes to lower the Y-pipe down - it was really no big deal at all.

Rog - you shouldn't hide the fact that if you order one of these with a cat, the cat bypass is also included... I didn't know and almost threw mine out!

Lucky I noticed the box seemed a bit heavy...

Having to drop the pipe to get to the clutch is not a deal killer... hopefully I won't have to fool with mine for a while. Having to remove the brace is. Oh well.

Got back under the car tonight to change the oil and got a couple pics if anyone wants to see what they look like. The car sounds nice. It has a pretty solid bark to it but not real high pitched. Sounds totally different than my 84 with a 3" single merge collector.

If you order either the Y or the X pipe the tubes that are removed to make room for the cats are also included as cat bypass pipes.

Dave,
I need to check but I thought you could remove the lower bell housing with the Y in place.
You can remove the cross brace on the earlier cars - Porsche did on the 79 <.

Both the Y pipe and X pipe are made by Dave Lomas ans MotorSports SLC. I used them on my own cars before I became a reseller for MotorSort SLC and IMOO were the best available.

When they removed the big 'ol truck crossmember in late '79(?), they added a smaller one, above the heat sheild, which braces the two sides of the tunnel, instead of the fake frame rails.

This may sound strange to some of you... but I'd rather leave the crossmember in. If Porsche thought that no bracing was necessary then they wouldn't have come up with the shorter brace than Ken mentions. Maybe I'll just get a Y-pipe made up out of an old cat. I'm not so much trying to get every last HP out of the car -- my cat rattles at certain temperatures and I'm just trying to do away with that annoyance between smog checks.
