I didn't read back everything, but door glass has to come out. The rest is optional but not a bad idea for weight savings. Also headlights, turn signals, side markers, etc. need to come out or be thoroughly taped over. We removed everything except the rear lights because good brake lights are required! Also not a bad idea to mount a third brake light inside the car just in case you get rear-ended and need a functional light.

Removing the rear glass and replacing with lexan would be good. In fact, we could just take the whole hatch off and fill the hole with lexan.

How stripped are you willing to go with this thing Mike?

Dash out?
Rear seats out?
Front seats out?
All interior out?
Heater stays in for defrost duty?
Rear hatch out?
Spare out!
Tool kit out!
Door panels out!
Sound deadening out?
Does this car have a sunroof?
Add another trans. cooler.
Add an engine oil cooler?
Jim B's magic window fot AT fluid.
Add brake ducts!
Upgrade brakes?
Change brake fluid to silicon!
Cage in!
Harness

As we think of new things, add to this list and copy and paste it into your post.

Legal to add the S4 wing on stilts.
Kibort had some Aluminum extensions that raised and tilted the S4 wing some.

S4 wings aren't much, are they. Especially with the 928 Intl sale.

They are about $200 - $250. Even with the sale I think the shipping would be a bear. Remember, we are working with a $500 total budget here. Maybe if we could find something local, even a ricer wing would be better than nothing. Who knows, we may not need a wing. It will depend on how tight the track is built. I'm not sure which portions they are using for this event but here is a map.

The car is a designated party car, the best parties I've been to began when the stripping started. The paint is already being stripped

Jim had a great idea - remove and sell the gas tank and straps - install a fuel cell. The H4 headlights are for sale as well as anything that can and will be taken off the car. Why Lexan - wouldn't Saran Wrap be lighter.

In some video they have added portable barriers on the straights to hold down the speeds...contacting any such "barrier" is a 30 minute time out penalty ! They had a fatality at the Altamont race and that reduced the fun factor. Head restraints (HANS etc) are highly recommended....

That explains why my 79 has cut S4 springs. Good info to know.

No S-4 springs are NOT twice as stiff ..... they were cut to lower the TOO HIGH 78-79. Brakes lights are required but they need not be 928 lights....any light will work like a couple trailer lights bolted to the rear of the hatch opening.

I have been told that we "might" see 100 mph = no wing.

The other tailight is there - but I'm taking them out and bolting in some old trailer lights since the hatch will be removed.

Jim - you fast, you dayum fast........

Wow - I'm amazed at all of the interest that has been shown for the lights. They are the originals from 1978 - does this make them antiques.
I'm headed out now to pull them - I haven't the slightest idea about cost yet. I'll post it and take the 34th caller......

Hoping to not get banned for not posting a price

Nice little hole in the rules of Lemons is that you can sell parts off the car and apply the money towards the $500 cap. You could even sell all the brakes and wheels and use that towards the $500 and then buy better brakes/wheels and it not count towards the $500 since they are safety items. Same applies to the fuel system for the car, I believe even down to the fuel injectors because I had asked the event organizer about this earlier this year.

Other nice thing is you can buy a $2k car and if you sell off $1500 in parts then you end up with a $500 car within the rules. This is something I wish we had better understood before we went out and bought a sub-$500 Volvo to use for Lemons. Looking back when I sold my 1984 928S euro for $2400ish a few years back I am pretty confident I could have gotten $2k out of parts off the car and still had a running vehicle for Lemons. I actually think that is a better route to go in hopes of getting a car hopefully more capable of lasting through the race without major breakage. Although just is not completely within the spirit of the race but definitely how you see a lot of the types of the cars racing without lap penalties.

Good luck with the project, I had been thinking about doing a 928 for it for the past 6 months. My partner in crime on this though wants to use this Volvo since it is already in owned and stripped. Our biggest obstacle has been finding other people willing to join in on this and share some of the cost to prep and race. Plenty of people want to join if they do not have to spend a dime or anything beyond their own safety gear though. We actually would have raced in the Houston event this past October but the driver issue during the summer created an extended period of lack of interest. Probably will race in either an out of state event in 09 or the second Houston race in 09.
