8700 mile 93 GTS is NOT what you'd expect :-(

This would be news to me if porsche went to base/clear for black at anytime in the 928's lifecycle.

cool, didnt know that.
Do you know what year they went from single stage to base/clear? Was it done in 92 with the GTS or ?
Whats your opinion of the factory two stage paints? I do consider the single stage to be VERY VERY good and very durable. They still can be made to look amazing today and they are now 20 years old.
Do you hold the two stage paint in the later cars in the same regard? Ive never played with one so i cant say i have an opinion.

This has gone slightly OT: sooo, on my '85 front black bumper, I have a small chip which shows red underneath. I don't know of any prior accident, or have any such indication such as dents or misfit panels around the bumper, but, don't laugh, was there such a thing as a red primer? Is there any other possibility besides primer or a non-original bumper?

There are tinted primers, but Porsche never used that, and if you used a tinted primer the tint is close to the same color as the base coat so that when you do get chips its not so noticeable. Meaning you wouldnt use a red tinted primer under a black basecoat

There aren't too many '95 GTS 5-spds out there, so even if it has been wrecked and properly repaired, it is still an excellent deal at $38k with 66k miles.

Porsche has problems early on with water based paints, especially with Zermatt silver. They must have figure out way to deal with it as only water based is in use now and have been for years. I think they had those problems solved before GTS production ended. This doesn't mean clear coat paints mentioned in this thread are water based. It just could be explanation for it. Paint number should tell which version they are.

I've polished out both two stage and single stage 928's and I agree that the single stage look much nicer and are much easier to bring back. The tough part of a single stage is that they seem to clog up the polishing pads faster and need to be changed our or cleaned several times to complete an entire car.
It's really a bummer that this car hasn't been cared for. It is a rare find and definitely would have collector status but I don't think it's worth reviving unless you plan to keep it and enjoy it. Actually Chuck, that is what you're looking for isn't it.....
