Default 8700 mile 93 GTS is NOT what you'd expect :-(

http://www.928registry.org/1993-928GTS-0112.htm

I have been staying in touch with a nice couple in Dallas who own a 1993 928 GTS which was owned originally by her brother, author, poet and artist Stan Rice of New Orleans. The car is black on black, a 5-speed and 8700 miles.

The Holy Grail of 928 GTSs? OMG, not even close! Today Sterling G, Sean R and Jim M did a PPI for me on this car. Below is a short list and only some of the things they found wrong with this car:

Here are the notes from the inspection today.

The things that stand out for me are:

Besides being filthy,

- Paint work, sanding scratches in the roof, mis-match color, tape lines in
doors and hatch

- Burn marks in the paint from someone using a high speed buffer and
damaged the paint, hard to say if this is repairable or not? Also burn marks on the rear quarter window trim and overspray on the windsheild trim.

- Sunroof mis-aligned, doesn't close all the way.

- Buffer marks on the window trim, not repairable and would need to be
replaced

- Poor quality install on the aftermarket stereo where wires to other
components were tapped into. 928s have a very complex wiring system and
stereo installers usually cause the most electrical issues in 928s.

- In-op odo/speedo How many miles?????

- Delaminating of the gauge facings, the instrument cluster would need to
be replaced as this in not fixable.

- ABS warning means the Anit-lock brake system has issues and is not
working

- Locking differential warning light means there could be potential issues
with the PSD

- In-operable headlights, they will not raise. Hitting something....

- Passenger window in-op

- hatchback not releasing

- Every wheel is curbed scratched or otherwise messed up.

- Lower front spoiler was torn off the car on the right side.

- 1/4" chip in the left front fender down to the metal.

- Many scratches in the and swirl marks over the entire car.

This inspection was only a visual inspection and didn't look at anything
mechanical and based on the above issues it's reasonable to assume there are
probably a few of those too.

The above list alone is many thousands of dollars to fix.

Sean's comment to me was: "the car looked like it could have 50-60k miles and NOT 8700 miles!"

I will post pics or Sean, Sterling or Jim please feel free.....

wow

bummer

sounds like an inop odometer is the only bonus for this car and the reason its only 8700 miles...... at least thats what it says.

Sounds like a nice project car though. If your passing maybe you could forward the details. Sounds like it needs a repaint, that means i can paint it any color i like!

Actually since youve passed, can you share with me the sellers information? But i imagine if its priced at what im thinking that Roger would pick it up before me, even though its got that crappy dog leg transmission in it.

That is too bad,

However Anne Rice, Stan's wife (ex??) has written many books and has included porsches in many of the stories. I wonder if this is the car that got her addicted?

I think I forgot to add that the drivers side fog light didn't come on also.

The car was not at all what I expected to see today. Is it nice? Sure, for the correct price. Is it worth $50k? No way in hell.

Chuck, was great talking to you today, feel free to post the pictures I sent you. Keep us up to date on how this turns out.

Thanks again Sean, you guys were awesome today! What you guys did for me today is why I love this community. I will post the pics when I get them on my website.

I would still like very much to have this car but at this point it is a rescue and I have a soft spot for rescues, dogs or 928s! It could be a very nice car but the price to make it that is HUGE. I'll keep you posted.

As of right now, they are set on the high number. I am STILL talking to them and the number gets to a reasonable point I will buy the car.

Chuck, fyi, the December Excellence arrived today in the mail with 928 Market Update. The text is the same as the last two years, but values have changed...downward. 1993 GTS in low condition was $26,247 in 2007 and is $21,591 in 2008. Excellent condition, $39,950 in 2007 and $32,863 in 2008.

Good luck.

If this was an S4 it would be a 5-6K car at best. I honestly think that the value of the car based on the documentation and included items with the car would be a rescue project valued in the 32 to 35K. based on the poor quality paint work on the door and the quarterpanel as well as the number of other paint imperfections a full repaint would be the only way to repair this car... just my humble opinion..... the owners are not car people, and have the original window sticker and other items all the way back to the original purchase contract to include the key tag that came with the car. It is a well documented piece of history considering the original owner..... but it has clearly been severly neglected and the current owners are emotionally attached to the car, and are seriously clueless regarding the true value of the car....
Well im with you on price, i was thinking it sounds like a nice project at $25K

If they are asking $50 and willing to go down to $30 which would be huge, i too would pass, there just isnt enough upside.

It is all about condition when it comes to 928's...GTS's in particular. Maybe the car has 85000 miles instead of 8500.... Who knows. Sounds like it LOOKS like an 85k mile car and a BAD one at that! My '92 has 135k miles on it and is in WAY BETTER shape than that POS! It would be a FULL ON REHAB and it would probably cost in excess of $15k and maybe WELL IN EXCESS of that!

Quick Reply: 8700 mile 93 GTS is NOT what you'd expect :-(
