Tony, do you still live in Washington? How long have you had the '86?

Charles,

I bought Vtach's car on Monday. It is my second 928, with the first being a Euro 79 car with a 80 Euro S engine in it. I regret selling that car and have often wished I had it back. Vtach's car will more than a replacement for the OB!

It is a long drive from WA, but I like road trips (and track time).

We'll look forward to meeting you. We usually park under the cover at the far end from where you pull into the grounds.

Tomorrow is the Thunderhill DE event.

I have the 305s to test out in the exhibition race at lunch time. should be interesting.

I have the passenger seat all bolted in and the "tunes" will be playing for rides!

Also, video cams for anyone that wants to try the Go-Pro camera.

Looking forward to seeing Dennis's new power on the track. (As well as some of it handling differences.)

I had a great time with NCRA. These guys do a first class event and everyone behaved themsevles. These folks bougth the old Tracquest organization and merged it with their company. I instructed for most of the day, but was allowed to take folks out for rides in the Holbert machine as well, during the "open" group sessions. The students were really good with the instruction and wanted to get better. by the end, these guys showed HUGE improvedments and actually were fun to drive with by their last session.

The exhibition race was a very colorful group of cars. GT3 porsches (2), ferrari 355, Lotus Exige, mustang, 911s, viper, vets (new and old, stock and pumped), subarus, and a few others. I think we had 15 cars for the race.
The holbert machine was fitted with the 305s up front for the race and experiment. I dont know what it is about the track, but it was rubbing bad on the warmup lap! during the race, i was just waiting for the tires to get cut and go flat. it never really happened and I was able to keep the lead from pole with a 2:00.5 lap time. It didnt feel any faster than the 275s up front. In fact, it felt like i was doing a wheelie with the 1" taller tires! they still pushed, in fact, maybe even more than the 275s. dont know why that is. with out rubbing, they werent bad, but it wasnt that great either. certainly not a huge different that i was expecting.

Dennis was out there and Ill leave that part of the report a little thin as he can add to it. basically, his car was loosing oil pressure, but that might have been due to him being a little low. when filled, he was puking out oil smoke out the pipe, like Scots car when he overfilled the oil levels. Dennis, in each session only went out for a few laps and came in. in one of the last sessions, the one time i didnt have the cameras rolling, dennis and i had a chance to drag down the front straight. (thats what is fun about DE days, you can play around like this) I let him pass after the final turn and then caught up and we were near dead even down the straight to the starter stand. at that point, our HP is about near equal and it sure seemed like it on the track. The next time, i was following Dennis, and we came off the final turn but "D" got a little sideways on the exit and i waited for him to gather it up and then i hit it in 3rd gear through 4th. I ran by him, but it was mostly because of his sliding exit of the prior turn.
Big let down as I really wanted to help him sort out the car, and give him a ride in mine, but the focus was solving the oil blowby issue which is really stumping us. When I was following Dennis, he left a cloud of smoke so thick, i lost him in the fog! It reminded me of the drive to the event at 6 in the morning .

I have a video of when i first started dicing with the GT3 porsches in the first sessions and of the 1st two laps of the exhibition race. I was about 1-2 seconds faster, so I slowed down a bit to get some good footage of the cars. man, GT3s are some neat street machines. (With hoosiers and a couple of stickers )

So, all in all, a pretty interesting day. Gave a ride to Demetri who was there riding with friends, and was able to drive the car home yet again from another race! The good ole' Holbert lucky star is still shining. 6 races and running strong!

Congrats to Mark for winning the production car part of the exhibition race. He ran off from a bunch of GT3's consistently by cutting quicker laps.

As for me, I had a few teething problems trying to figure out how much oil to put into the system. Between the oil pan spacer and the newly installed Accusump, it was hard to know exactly how much oil was required. After being underfilled and seeing weird pressure drops in the first session, I ended up overfilling it for the 2nd session. During the hot laps, a ton of oil got pulled into the intake/throttle body via the breather system. I was creating huge plumes of oil smoke through the exhaust. I ended up doing only a couple laps before coming in.

In between sessions we tried to clean up the mess in the intake and did a few runs up & down the highway outside the track. There was so much oil in the intake that I kept on getting black flagged after a lap or so in the following sessions. The oil was even in the ISV.

By the last session however it had pretty much cleared up and I got to at least run w/ Mark for a few laps. It was nice to finally unleash the Screamer and see that it could do. It was pretty cool to be side-by-side for what seemed the entire straight and be able to look over into Mark's car & give him the thumbs-up.

I want to thank my friends Jim Morton & Bill Ball for coming out to the track to see me run. It's a pretty cool thing to have an experienced pitcrew helping you out at a mere DE day. Thanks guys!

Dennis:

Your words are those of a true gentleman with great patience. I am not sure I could have stayed so calm and collected while we worked through the oil fumagation system... Thanks bud.

Once we have these few problems sorted out, I am confident we'll have your "screaming" through more than just the straightaways.

Hearing the exhaust note on the open track was worth the day... not to mention the fun drive home and a good Italian dinner.

Guys
Sounds like it was a great time.....I'm really bummed I missed it, but the widow isn't ready anyway... :>(
I signed up for the next one for $99..Feb 12th or 13th..... The widow should be done by then....

Bummer about Dennis's oil problem.... but the good news is you were able to figure it out and finish the day + drive home...so that cool....

Hopefully we can all get out there for a track day...it would be so cool to see Dennis-MK & the widow all out there.....the bummer is I'd be the slowest due to lack of experience and HP, since I'm down at least 80whp to both those 928's.....but it would be great to get Dennis-MK's instruction in the same day!!

It was a real treat to see Dennis and Mark in a out-and-out drag race down the front straight. They looked very even. Mark has the torque monster motor and at TH there isn't enough room to get into the zone where Dennis' higher HP might be evident. Anyway, it was a true thing of beauty the see the two fastest cars there blasting side-by-side down the front straight! It is really, really too bad we did not have a camera running.

Lesson for the day - don't ever overfill the oil! We kinda screwed up dealing with the oil requirements of the Accusump with all the other mods, first with too little and then too much oil and ended up putting a bunch of oil into the intake, as we are still running the stock breather configuration. The intake can hold quite a bit of oil. We tried to clean it out, but it took a couple of aborted track sessions on top of this before the car ran clean again. In the last session of the day, it did run clean and we did get to see the Dennis blast around chasing down all the other cars.

We got great satisfaction from that last session. The car appears unphased from our oil mishaps and performed very well in its first track test. We had a chance to do some street dyno tests on the way back from the track, and the results were very good.

Bill
So I'm guessing the street dyno session on the way home went better than the last one we tried

Which BTW I never heard anything from.....which is a GOOD thing!
