I think this is one of the "DOT mandates" that Alan was complaining about. He's cool with body parts being chopped off by auto-closing windows.
Then the manual is misleading and doesn't clarify that it is not for US/CANADA.

I just went out and opened the ROW jumper and express Up for the driver side works, door open or closed, as long as the ignition is on, just as the manual says. That's cool.

So, it was working properly. I may leave the ROW jumper open so the owner has driver side express up too.

SO, WE ARE DONE!!

THANKS AGAIN!

Gotcha. I misunderstood Alan when he asked about the jumper. It was correct for US/Canada, and I missed that that locks out the express up.

I'll probably go ahead and switch mine over to ROW mode, too.

I actually forgot to do it last night (wasn't thinking that clearly anymore!) before I buttoned things up.

And — truth be told — I actually deferred my celebratory drink to this evening. Cheap (uh... I mean "inexpensive") Australian red wine, FWIW.

DRINKS ARE ON THE HOUSE!

That was easy. It only took 160+ posts to figure it out!

You know what I think...limbs - who needs em!. Those poor Europeans... how do they survive amongst these beastly cars - they must have so few arms left... how do they drive - with their teeth?

So I do think this is an example of trying a little too hard to protect people from their own stupidity - as a great line in 'Little Shop Of Horrors' says: "....some people deserve to die!"

And if its designed to protect children what's riskier? - having windows that can go up all the way when you press a button - or leaving kids in a 170MPH car with the keys in it...

Alan

PS my GTS owners manual says nothing about express closing...?

now Bill just think how much this would have cost if you took it to the dealer, and you have not got to the blower fuse problem yet. 160 posts were worth it~ Goodluck with the rest of your project

I guess it could have. The phenomenon of the window going down spontaneously started recently, long after I had swapped in the new controller due to other reasons (I thought it was a source of parasitic draw).

Bill - All - I stumbled over this while looking for something else... to me it looks like the same beast... a different source - VW Passat/Corrado from some years - a little less coin too...

UPDATE:

Although I fixed the major problem of the passenger window going down spontaneously by identifying a short in the power wire to the sunroof, some anomalies remain.

1. There appears to be 90ma of parasitic draw still in the window controller circuit, identified by pulling fuse 31.
2. The windows will not operate with the ignition off and the doors still closed if the controller is set to US mode by the jumper wire. If in ROW mode, the windows will operate any time regardless of key or doors.

The car left for its new owner today with this problem remaining. I thought all was good after fixing the sunroof short, but the parasitic draw remains. When the new owner gets the car, we'll be back to troubleshooting.

Further follow-up....the remaining 90ma parasitic draw may be like the fan controller - a timed event. The caution that you must wait 45 minutes after the car is run for controllers to time out to evaluate the true parasitic draw includes the window controller in one source I just read. Can't find that at the moment, but it makes sense as the system functions after the key is removed.

Bill...
Thanks for the follow-up. He's driven the car quite a bit and is very happy with it. On days without snow on the ground he's been swapping between my 85 and the 90. We have a long list of things to get to between the 4 cars so we'll investigate further as soon as it warms up a bit and come back to report.
