Just to clarify...

The intent of this thread was not to condemn the actions of "The Younger Generation."

...but rather to expose and condemn the acts of one particular person.

Actually, while I'm at it, there were three reasons I decided to post this thread:

1. I was PISSED! I am not so affluent that the loss of $250 is chicken feed.

2. I believe we have an innocent-appearing malignancy among us here on the Renny. And I felt the individual needed to be exposed in the interest of protecting other potential innocent victims in the future.

3. Ross' chances for rehabilitation of his life will vastly improve if he is not allowed to continue to hide his problems, lie, manipulate, and take advantage of people.

Virtually every drug user is an ardent liar, a master manipulator, skilled at taking advantage of people, and very talented at hiding his use and keeping it secret.

For those reasons, almost all users require some form of a very blunt intervention from friends and family before they'll get beyond denial and seek help.

Well, this can function as a virtual intervention if Ross will accept it. Don't know if he will or not.

But anyone who continues to send him money is simply enabling his continued drug use. And if his drug use continues, it will kill him - one way or the other.

So if any of you ever find yourself tempted to bail him out of trouble or consequences in the future, think hard about the principle that you're enabling him to kill himself.

Recovering from drug use requires very tough love, painful honesty, the avoidance of enabling behavior, and the exposure to total accountability for one's choices and actions - with no bailing out from well-meaning friends or family.

I understand that it doesn't count as Kie giving Ross a "gift."

But it's still cash available to fund part or all of the trip!

And if you add another $100 gift, that brings our grand total up to:

$1537.00

So far...

I understand now Bigs. I was struggling with the keyboard when Ross needed help. I reread some old threads and decided against it. Gut feeling.

Yea, but it gave us a very entertaining side conversation.

Please forgive me. I am not so experienced in this world as some others, but it is my understanding that alcohol and nicotine are "drugs". I have noticed in my short time on this planet that many parents use such substances, but beat the s**t out of their children if they use them. I can't seem to understand this behaviour whereby younger people are condemned and punished for mimiicking their parents' ways. It must be my simplemindedness or some other shortcoming. Perhaps as I become a bit older I will understand it.

I had offered to send him some gas money through Paypal, but my spider senses alerted me to danger and I crawled back into my hole.

Excellent point.

Example is indeed the most powerful of teachers.

But, having said that, a bad example is just as powerful a teacher if one pays attention! You can learn just as much from watching what not to do as from observing a success.

Hence the need for strong positive role models. Be a mentor.

Well, let me help 'splain my behavior principles. first, I'm an adult, kids are - well, kids. We no more give them jobs, families, driving, flying, money privileges that we do pets. The world of kids and the world of adults is a different world. When I've lived the 50(or 40, or 25) years on this planet, and made it safely out of puberty, if I want a bourbon and a cigar, then I have one, or more. Comparing kids drug use to that of adults is like comparing school to work. If my kid doesn't go to school he gets stupid. If I don't go to work, we get tossed on the street, the state takes away my kids, I don't eat and become a bum. Different strokes.

I think 'beat the **** out of them' is a bit of a stretch, but yes, we do chastise and punish kids for trying to assume the pleasures of adults without the concomitant responsibilities of adults. For me, I don't smoke, but I have a beer often, and once in a while I have something harder. I've told my kids 'if you want a drink of alcohol, tell what you want and I'll get it for you, in this house, under adult supervision'. Under NO circumstances are they to drink liquor outside the house, or even hang around kids who do. Both of my kids have declined, saying beer tastes horrible, and so does Vermouth(I have yet to give them a whiff of Drambuie, in a warm glass, with an iced Vodka chaser).

Sorry for the off topic rant, but this has come up before, and there is a completely logical reasoning for the double standard. Kids are not adults, and don't share the same world as adults.

I need better spider senses.

OTOH, you know, some folks look at this scenario and become very cynical. I choose not to respond in that manner.

It is still my intent to believe and assume the best in my fellow humans.

...but in the future I will spend a little more time in initial evaluation of - and familiarization with - a potential recipient before I open my checkbook.

Because - and this is an aspect of this sorry story that we haven't really discussed yet -

I feel like I squandered my generosity on a manipulating little doofus - when that same money might have gone to someone who would have really benefited from it and would have made good, solid use of it in an admirable way!

In my mind, it's not only $487 lost... It's $487 WASTED! It's $487 that is now not available for helping someone else!

It's the feeling of giving someone an expensive gift, and they promptly chuck it in the trash.

How about this for drug user, **** YOU. You have no god damn right to call me a drug user and want to "expose me". I was invloved in a accident at work where I took a vehicle for a test drive, the throttle stuck, and I crashed into a palm tree on the property, the air bag exploded on my hand and broke it into 50 pieces, I suffered severe whiplash and paid a visit to a hospital as a result. I was sent to a "specialist" who specializes in getting people addicted to this drug, I had no idea what it was or what life would be like after it. I have been clean for awhile now and plan to take legal action with my doctor.

Drug addict, scam artist, con........ why don't you come out from behind the computer, meet me, and say this **** to my face?
