I Am Damn Steamed About Whitefox!
OK folks. I've had it with young Ross (whitefox). I'm going public with this crap.
I extended all sorts of generous assistance to this young man during his excellent adventure across country from Seattle to Florida. Here's the sum total prior to today's surprise:
$50 to his PayPal account
$11 to fill his gas tank in Provo
$11 to feed him at a restaurant
$145 for a night's lodging at the Provo Marriott Fairfield
$20 cash for incidentals
That's already a grand total of $237.
You may be wondering why I paid for him to spend the night at a nice hotel rather than just putting him up in my home. Well, there's a reason for that.
When Ross and I were conversing at the restaurant, it soon became apparent that he was not so much concerned if I could help him with lodging as he was if I could help him with Oxycontin.
His story is that he was involved in a wreck some months ago, and his doctor prescribed "massive" doses of Oxycontin - to which he became addicted. I'll leave it up to you as to whether or not you believe that story.
He stated that he was trying to gradually wean himself off Oxycontin - and he thought he had brought enough with him to get him across country and home, but unfortunately he hadn't. (Riding a sport bike across country on public roads while taking Oxycontin??!!)
Although he didn't come right out and ask, "Can you get me some Oxycontin?" he made oblique requests all around the issue: "Do you know what I can do?" "Is there any way you could help me out?" I declined.
So, with that rather startling revelation, everything changed. I was scheduled to go to some friends for a dinner party that night, and my wife was in Texas.
And I was simply not willing to give Ross free unsupervised access to my home while I was away. Sorry, but having had a son of my own on drugs, I'm pretty knowledgeable about the tendencies of drug users.
At the same time, I felt like I had made a commitment to provide lodging for him for that night. So, I had him follow me through town to the Marriott Fairfield - because it was right off the freeway - and put him up there for the night... using my VISA card, since I didn't have my checkbook with me. Nor did I have $145 worth of cash with me.
At that point I figured I'd learned a pretty damned expensive lesson about helping a young kid on a poorly-planned adventure.
But that was before tonight!
Tonight, I'm at my computer balancing my checkbook with my online bank statement. Guess what I find?
I find an entry from the Marriott Fairfield for the amount of $394.98!!!
What the hell?!
So I call the Marriott, and they check their records.
Turns out that the entire hotel is a non-smoking facility and my "good friend" Ross chose to smoke in his room. The hotel has a policy of charging a $250 fee for cleaning, aerating and refreshing a room after someone has smoked in it!
So, my well-meaning attempt at being a Good Samaritan has cost me a grand total of:
$487.00
I am STEAMED!
Ross, if you read this, I expect to be repaid the $250 caused by your stupidity.
And, for the rest of you Rennlisters, you at least know some details about Ross' character. You can decide if you ever wish to help him again in the future.

Did the same thing to help a friend from here (back when it was the PorscheList) with his "business". Little did I know his business was stealing from "friends"... My loss was about 12X yours so just be thankful it was not worse!
