Spokane TA..82 Track Car inaugural run..(longish)
We had our now annual Spokane Track Attack yesterday..and this was the first outing for my 82 Track car...
Prior to heading out I still had the occasional rough start/poor running that manifests itself after the third or fourth restart. I thought I had it narrowed down to a constant power draw in the EZK (always on)..that I could take care of by disconnecting the battery. Seemed to work and so off we went...
Drive over was good, solid handling and it seemed to run better with every mile... One note about an essentially empty 928 with open pipes....loud loud loud.....ear plugs next time .
At the track the car ran extremely well..pulled strong and really had a good feel through the corners...the 750 front / 500 rear hypercoils mated to bilstein sport shocks worked well. Could probably pick up some better shocks down the road, but for now these worked well. My oil pressure was solid, even over extended laps, and the engine temps never got above the 1/2 mark on the gauge. Used about a quart of oil at the track...most likely due to ingestion into the intake..(need to re-route the breathers...). The S4 brakes performed flawlessly and were never an issue.
The tranny was your typical 82 28/05 (no LSD)..so yes on the bad synchros, and yes on the wheel spin coming out of corners..the motor would overwhelm the hoosiers without a problem coming out of the turns...(I need LSD). I didn't get a chance to changes out the fluid..so after a long run on the track, I lost every gear..couldn't go into any gear at all....coasted for a bit...and then it cooled enough to get into gear. Got worse on the last outing..only making it three laps before it locked me out of the gears..so I need to change the fluid..and then possibly add a cooler ..when I add in LSD.
The gearing (2.73) is good for now since it is the same in my GT and I didn't have to learn a new shifting technique at this track..
All in all, it was a good day at the track. We had Chris Ford (87 S4 with GTcams), Louie Ott (Monster 928), Adam B (88 S4 essentially stock), John Davis (83 track car), Mike McMullen (86.5 5sp stock), Tom D (93 GTS), and Colin J ( 81 eurobody, 86.5 engine with aftermarket engine management, 87 tranny). We put in a lot of laps and all without issue. Lots of other cars too, but never a real issues since the track is long and passing is easy. Maybe others will chime in with their experiences..but as a group, we always have a blast.
On the way home after the track and after our dinner stop, the track car would not run right...definitely smelled rich and although I could keep the engine running it was bucking and kicking the whole time (same as it always did after the 4th or 5th restart). Consensus seemed to be ignition issues, but I brought along my 89GT brain set just in case (as well as host of other parts..you know...if you bring it..you won't need it)..well...popped in the EZK brain first...and no change....figured..might as well swap in the LH..did that..and it immediately ran well. Coincidence???not sure..but right now ..points to a bad LH..however, I have never heard of this kind of LH failure.. Now that the car is back home, I will go through the wiring of the brains to make sure it's proper and then go from there. Worst case, the 82 fuse panel will be taken out and replaced with a later one and only the necessary items will be put back in...
All in all...a good first run..and a great day at the track.....

so the 82 track car has the later engine, or euro?
sounds like you had a good time. what rear end oil are you running? swepco works great on the old bugger synchros. If its a newer box, the redline NS/regular works great with LSD.

Adam got his AT back together? Hope some of the others report in with their experiences as well. How was Louie's monster on the track? I would have loved to have seen that.

Mark..this is the 82 body with the 91 S4 engine...and as far as tranny fluid..not sure what is in there (haven't look at it yet)..was thinking redline to help with the synchros...but if swepco is better for old synchros..then I'll give that a go (it is a 82 tranny)
Regarding Adam's tranny, ...he borrowed an 87 A/T with LSD from John Davis while his is being rebuilt (something about tough time sourcing some AMG bits)...
Louies car did well...it's a mean sounding machine....I was getting on the track in a line of cars and Louie was on the front straight passing us..(followed by a GT-3)...I though hmm...the GT3 is gaining....and then Louie hit the gas..the rear squatted..and off he went like out of cannon...simply awesome.....
Andrew..I'll be down at PIR next SCCA season for sure..hope to have all my little issues sorted by then..
and btw..Chris Ford actually had the chance to drive Louie's monster on the track...maybe he'll post up some thoughts..

I've posted some pics of the 928's (and some of the other cars there) in a photobucket album for those that are interested...

I had a blast as well, and thanks again to all the people responsible for it.
Only downside is that the hero cam didnt seem to want to work right (turns out batteries were buggered) so I wasnt able to get any real footage.
I am glad that Tom wasnt given a bat on the way home, not sure his car would have survived.
I still say his issues are in the wiring of the car and nothing else.
My car ran well, but my breather system really is not good, and I ended up going through abit more oil.
The short shifter linkage assembly I made for my car worked beautifully, except when someone else tried to drive the car, they couldnt find any gears. I did have my holding system (hose clamps) back off though at the end so I had to tighten it up and it is good to go again.

Why would you want that, when you can suffer with the old one?

I'm giving the tranny a lot of flak..but in reality..it doesn't shift too poorly...mostly when I got from 5 to 3..which on the Spokane track is a few times..If I go a bit easier on it it does OK..and likely with some fresh fluid it will do better too.. So..what are the details on the LSD?..whatcha want for it?...
