The Now Official Mongo's Intake Manifold Service Thread
EDITED
Okay Okay! I'm going for it now! Intake Service Time! Looks like I'm going to be doing it in 2 weeks! August 30 and 31 to be exact! If anyone in the Bay Area is available and is interested in helping or watching, let me know. I am going to have Pizza and 2 cases of beer at my girlfriend's house.
Type of beer should be suggested in advance please.
Anyone have a used knock sensor that will be compatible with an 87-on car? I have a knock sensor that WAS working before the harness disintegrated due to the vast amount of heat these engines produce.
If the harness on your used sensor is not as frail as tissue paper, PM me. Thanks!

The knock sensors are almost the first thing to turn to crap under the intake system. They are the first thing to loose their insulation and fall apart. Getting a good used knock sensor might be like finding a good used condom.

Young jedi, you have so much to learn.
When the knock sensor is inoperative, the car detects this and say, "Holy crap! We can't detect knock anymore becasue on/both sensors is not working!" In that case, the car will retard ignition timing by 6º to avoid knock - this is a fail safe setting. I believe this can rob as much as 30-40 RWHP!
So, just becasue it's not knocking/pinging, is no indication that the sensor is working. The only way that I know for sure to tell is to hook up a diagnostic tool and see if you get a knock sensor error.

I'm aware of how the system works. I'll be replacing the connector by the end of this week. If it runs like sh*t still then I know it's the knock sensors. But there is no way in hell I'm losing 30-40 rwhp on this car. Not yet that is...

Andrew, the symptom is a broken wire and connector ..... knock sensors don't usually go bad. I read a write-up in up-fixin or somewhere, they tested a bunch of old ones and all worked fine. It's the wires usually. And those can be replaced. I was too lazy and bought new sensors, more than on one car.

the wire on mine is in pretty bad shape, and the knocksensor itself is all in plastic pieces. however, the connector is in good shape. still interested in me sending it to you?

Andy--
Considering the aggravation of replacement and the amount of work need just to add new wiring and a connector, call our favorite supplier and ORDER TWO NEW ONES. Do it like you mean it. Or leave them off, eat the 40hp until you can fix it right. Buying used sensors is like using refurb'd spark plugs with used wires wrapped with electrical tape, stuck into a cracked cap with no connector boots. Sure, it will start and maybe it will run.
Need a reliable car by Wednesday night? Rent one.
