The fuel injector plugs and all the wire clip plugs (MAF, throttle switch, ISV) will come off if you wiggle them firmly side to side, cocking to one side then the other, the wire clip will give and release the plug. A screwdriver might do more damage than wiggling. Try it. Practice on the water bridge temp sensors, although those are usually in even worse shape than the injector plugs. I don't have the special tool and I don't use a screwdriver on these plugs.

Thanks for the advice. I'll tackle it tomorrow when I get home from work. I'm going extra early so I can get out early and pull this Momma out!

Oh and BTW, if anyone has an extra fuel rail cover mounting bolt (the one where you need a hex key to get it off) let me know... I stripped one last night but got it off with channel locks.

most of my stuff crumbled when it came off. I had to get new harnesses. iirc, carl at 928 MS is making them now since some of them are NLA. pretty inexpensive compared to OEM too. might check them out, as they are just timebombs and if you are in there anyway....

Try OSH.

BIG PROBLEM

The knock sensor in the front of the motor has been siliconed into the wire harness connector. There is enough silicone in there to completely destroy the connector if I try chopping through it.

I am going to need a female 3-prong connector from a wiring harness to splice in and repair this one for sure. The factory harness CANNOT be saved.

If anyone looking at this has a wiring harness with this 3-prong knock sensor connector (the female one that is on the factory harness) please PM me ASAP. I need it by the end of next week.

Pics are below.

Are you sure? From your pictures, I see that the sensor connector outside of the female harness connector has turned to dust and blown away. That's normal at this age. Further, it looks to me like what's in the harness-side connector may just be the remains of the old knock sensor plug. When they go, the bits often turn 'glassy' looking and the 'silicon' may be the residual on the connectors.

I usually have to get out a small pick to dig out the old bits of the sensor connector from the harness-side connector. Sometimes they seem almost glued in place. But they aren't.

Be sure before you cut the connector off the harness. Be very sure.

I just, today, read last rights to an 86 5-speed on which someone had done so many fixes to the engine harness that it's become hopeless. Don't cut an expensive harness unless you are sure you have too.

There is superglue in there. I confirmed it along with Permatex "SILLY-CONE." LOL Believe me.

Intake Party is cancelled next week. My parents were in a severe car accident and I came down to San Diego to assist them for the week in their recovery. Sorry guys. This is going to have to wait. At least I can get a connector for the female end of factory knock sensor harness while they get some rest this week.

Andy
Sorry to hear this. Hope all is alright. Dont stress about the intake party, still count me in when you decide to do it.

Hey guys, I'm back. My parents are doing better. Both my Mom and Dad are coming up for Thanksgiving and my Dad wants to go cruising the day after so it looks like I need to get it running! I am looking to get this car running on Saturday September 6th so I can take it to work on Monday the 8th. I have 2 more elbows on the way that attach the rubber intake sleeve. They shattered during disassembly. 20 year old plastic = compost - enough said.

Anyone interested in coming over for some beer and a little assistance in bolting the intake and injectors back up to the block? Many Many Thanks in Advance! Please PM me for directions so I can get a head count and be sure I get the right amount of beer, chips and salsa

BTW, the intake is painted and I'll be painting the oil filler black this week. It's strange that in 1987 these filler tubes are metal, but in 1989 on Bill Swift's car when he was doing his service, I noticed it was plastic? Did the engineer have a weight reduction idea or something? Anyways...back to taking crap apart now..

Here are some pictures below BTW -

The intake gaskets were put on with Permatex! Some other a-hole was in here and decided to half-*** everything obviously.

Another pic of a driver seat that also doubles as effective storage since I don't have a garage to work in...

Andy - I'd cover those intake holes on top of the engine immediately - stick rags in them or whatever, but don't leave them open!

Already done! I even vacuumed the crap out of them before shoving some rags down there. I'll vacuum them again before the intake goes on too.

BTW, here's a tip for those of you who decide to hit the search to function on how to keep your connectors alive as you disconnect your fuel injectors. Get a magnetic tool and a flat blade screwdriver to remove the harness clips. This will make it incredibly easy to unplug the injectors! Magnetic tools are the best thing since sliced bread!

Ok. Now I totally believe that someone siliconed the knock sensor connectors.
