I also am a little nervous about the shortblock still. I just cant see how the pistons can move so much in the bore (side to side), even though the tops are supposed to be smaller than the skirts and they are shorter than porsche stock. seeing a picture of another nicasil block assembled would sure make me feel more comfortable! anyone got any? spec is .004" at the skirts and im seeing well over .020" on the tops. anyone know the difference of the tops vs bottoms on JE pistons?

I just get a little nervous, especially in uncharted waters (for me)
I didnt want to pull a piston out, but, if i could get the top of the piston vs skirt difference, and they were .020" diff, I sure would feel better. Its just is so strange to look down the holes and see the rings at the side of the pistons!
The guy at JE couldnt answer my questions, as he said he wasnt familar with porsches, but he had the specs.
I would bet its ok as well, but I just want to be sure.
If i remember correctly, you have a piston in hand and then JE tells you what to tell US Chrome to bore and coat the cylinders to a certain dimension.

Take one out and measure it. If you don't have the proper tools to do it, take it to someone who does. I have given you the specs from JE and US Chrome but apparently you need to see the measurements for yourself...... there is nothing wrong with that and I think you should, make that NEED to do it for peace of mind. Trust me, I won't be offended nor will the engine builder.

I hear what you are saying and I understand your concern.
A few months ago when you brought this up I did check with all involved to verify the specs and everything was right.
You are correct in saying that the piston is typically manufactured and then the bore is finished honed accordingly to meet tolerance. A spec was given to US Chrome as was a spec given to JE and they both were verified before assembly to make sure piston to bore clearance was within the tolerance, which was dictated by JE Pistons.

Are you serious mark? Really? You want to question the motor specs? I think alot of people here, financially and non-financially involved in this "experiment" with basically giving you an engine - are a bit more than a little irritated right now. Todd built this engine, I am pretty sure. I would trust this man with building an engine to "run" my heart or lungs for god's sake. The level at which he thinks and understands these lumps (and many others) is so far past yours and my understanding, its nearly impossible to comprehend.
When you build a RACE ENGINE, you leave some more clearance in certain cases so that there is not dangerous contact from thermal growth.
What BC means when he touches on your history of "not fixing things when they break" is that you simply seem to lack even a slight understanding of certain mechanical paradigms, and because of your complete resistance to listening to others, this has a very hazy and dangerous mix.
Privately, I lobbied to make damn sure a COMPLETE engine was somehow delivered to you so that you wouldn't even SEE or touch the inside of the engine. I don't know how - taking your heads off and redoing them somehow (logistically) and bolting them on properly and then getting you a basically complete engine that any monkey could attach some accessories to.
Honestly, to let someone like you (great drover - not so much on technical stuff like this) near this open-heart engine, is downright crazy.

Bendan, I am sick to death of you holding back and not telling people how you really feel. Look man, we are all upset about the closing of Bennigans but together we can get through this.
Are these pistons forged? Typicaly you will have more clearance with forged pistons because they swell a little more than a cast piston. It sounds like the Green Bay crew checked and double checked everything. Your in good hands.

Either way, but some of us need you to be on the track wheel-to-wheel, posting up videos so we can live vicariously via you.
Make a call, we'll all be supportive.

All is good. Mark is questioning things and that means he is paying attention to what he is facing. Better to know what you are dealing with than just shooting from the unknown. All the comments and suggestions are good information for everyone.

everyone makes mistakes. When its your own, you double check everything.
Remember, ive built a few of these in stock form and they are still running today. Im not an engine builder, but i follow instructions and like to understand what I got an why things work. That way, if there is a problem, i can start rulling out things and narrow down the cause.
I dont think anyone is frustrated, at least from the communications I've got, but Im sure most would want to see this engine in the car and on the track.
Since, Ive proved that the stock 928 can get a lot of second place finishes, its time to win a few races . I think its time the engine goes in. So what if it has some teething issues, as far as I know and have seen, it should be just fine. How much tuning has anderson ever done???? joe fan??? NONE. They put a well designed short block in the car and bolted on all the stock stuff with all stock settings using stock MAFs etc. a rising rate fuel regulator is the only thing they use to keep fuel in the safe range. SURE, they could have got 10-20 more hp with a shark tuner, but that can always be done later. Im making 305rwhp, im sure this beautiful work of art short block stroker will put out a bit more than that!!
So, its time to put the 928 list engine in and if it cost me a weekend, I could probably grab the 3rd place in the championship by missing a race. besides, who cares about 3rd anyway. I care more about driving! (thats the only downside for me, is missing a race)
Its time to kick up the power and make a dash for the championship!

THANKS BILL!!
IM thinking ill start this tomorrow and start getting the headers and the clutch out. I need those special wrenches to get the big bolt oil cooler hex heads off, and then figure out how the chains attach to the engine.
If i can get this out by this weekend, i can build the new engine all week long and get it ready to put in the following weekend. This way, i could drive it for 2weekends and get a dyno in. (and have a week just in case things take a little longer)
Sears Point over labor day!!!! I wont tell anyone, which might be funny if it holds together and drops the 3 seconds im guessing it will save at Sears.
