Very nice. How many inches square is that hole for the S4 tail light indentation for the early body? How far must it go in?

I had a dream the other night about the front and rear S4 bumpers, in that they may be installable on the early cars without cutting the fenders or body at all. Only changing the shape of the plastic bumpers (lower area - making it straight down) and cutting the lamp indent. This would require different tail lamps, or cutting them as well. But I already painted my car, so thats why I was thinking about that.

Thanks for the pics.

Wow Brendan, maybe I can cc it for you! Just kiddin' brutha.
First of all it had to be a dream if you did those mods without cutting anything.
There was no manual for this so I had to do it on the fly. Let's take the driver's side for explanation's sake. I made a 'c' shaped cut in the panel so I could push it in for clearance. Then I fabbed up a pie shaped piece of steel to fill in the gap. But the hardest part was further inboard. The upper inboard section interfered with the tailight. I cut it out with a plasma cutter & made a metal plate to fill it in. My son welded it all back together, ground it smooth & primered it up. Jim Bailey told me it was a chore & he was correct. But it wasn't impossible. Maybe this picture helps you see it in your mind....In reality it isn't that hard, it's just that I had never done it before & didn't know what was involved, - it would be much easier the second time around. Kinda like the fear of the unknown. which in my mind is overrated.

Regards, Hammer

While we're on the subject, I'm curious. Who else has done this & how did you do it? (the rear S4 conversion).

Hammer,
Local racer Ken Osage has fitted an S4 rear cover on his '80 race car. I could take some pics as the car is still in assembly stages, but as far as how? I think just a plasma cutter and some bending tools? (It's helps to own a sign manufacturing company )

Adam,
I don't mean for anyone to go to any trouble. My car is done. I was just wondering. Such as the two spots that have to be moved in, rather than cut out the whole area I chose to cut 3 sides of a square & pivot the panel in, then add a pie shaped piece. If there's a better way I'd like to know in case I ever have to do it again. (Lord I hope not!)

Thanks, Hammer

Your son does some killer body/paint work. I can definitely appreciate what you guys did, as I did the exact same thing about a year ago (except it doesn't look quite as good! and my pops wouldn't have had a clue how to help). Looks great.
