Next topic of sound deadening is the cavern at the B-pillar in front of the rear wheels. Some of the other Rennlisters have used the expanding foam Great Stuff from Lowes or Home Depot. After talking with over with Raamaudio, they did not recommend it. Their experience with it was that even though it expands, it still leaves voids that can trap moisture. I decided to not go this route.

I first sprayed this area with Quiet Kote. Hans from here on Rennlist suggested this. The spray cans do not go on very thick, but it was a good base for sealing this area.

Next, I lined this area with the silver sound deadener from Raamaudio. They informed me it would do fine out in the elements. Finally, I put down the ensolite foam over that.

Pics are showing RH wheel well only.

I then concentrated on the plastic close out panels themselves. On the forward side of them, I put down sound deadener and ensolite. I had some cracking around the fastener holes, so I also added plates to strengthen this area.

While I was working on the forward close outs, I also fabricated one for the RH rear. See pic of both rear panels. No sound deadening on these.

Here are a couple pics of the new carpet I installed and the re-dyed/conditioned leather. I bought the German Velour carpet from Rob Budd.

There is also a pic of the Keith Widom style console reconfig I posted about a while back.

Here is a pic of my new color matching bumperettes. I also added clear markers on the front and rear from Nicole at Hooked on Cars. I added a Sharkfin antenna to cover the roof mounted mast. Any finally, my new 18" Cup 4s I got off eBay for $300. The tires are new Bridgestones from Tire Rack. I have 235s up front and 295s in the rear without rolling any fenders. It is close, but no rubbing so far.

Last pic for today is one my wife took with her cell phone. It is pretty cool with the "swift" truck in the background.

Interesting sound deadening in the rear wheel wells - whats your subjective impression on the noise reduction of that part? Or is it hard to tell with all the other deadening added?

Mike,

Great job man!!

That's the best interior sound deadening job I've seen on Rennlist bar none!

I'm not familiar w the material you used, but if its as good as the other materials (brown bread, b-quiet extreme, dynamat, etc) I'm sure it's about one of the quietest 928s (interior wise) on the road!!

Man, that interior application of sound deadening is a pure work of art. I hope your window motors and lift arm wheels are in good shape. I'd hate the have to do the insulation over again. Anyway, stunning work. Almost hate to hide it with door panels and carpet.

Hilton,
It is hard to tell since I went from the stock partially covered deadener to just about every place I could apply the new stuff. I knew I wanted to do something forward of the rear wheels. This car originally came from Canada, so I am sensitive to the amount of corrosion that can happen if things are not taken care of. This is why I did not do the Great Stuff. I did not want to trap moisture up there. It might happen or it might not, but I did not want to take that chance. I also trust the guys at Raamaudio when they did not recommend it. They did recommend an expanding foam for this, but it was over $100 a can and was from Germany. He also mentioned it was a MAJOR PITA to work with. My approach might not be as good sound wise, but it is reversible if I need to get back in that are for some reason.

Thanks for all the kudos guys. I did not think I would ever get this done. I started gutting the interior back at Christmas (if that tells you anything). I also had to repair my block with Greg Browns WP failure tool at the same time. It is a slippery slope when you get started. I went from just changing carpet to full sound deadening and pulling all the interior out for a condition and dye job.

Bill,
Funny you should mention the door panels. After I got all the sound deadening down, my driver window did not work. I had to pull a section back off to find one of the motor leads had come disconnected. The sound deadener is a major PITA to work with.

I will have to get back in there at some point to freshen up the window guides and stuff, but not for a while. I might think about that next time there is snow on the ground...
