That should do it. Go get your old one ASAP since they may have sold you a rebuilt and that is the core which needs to be returned and take it in for testing . Have the parts store write a statement that the alternator is O K and have them date and sign the paper.

Oh boy!
By the time Rennlist is done, she'll have 11" wide rear wheels, flames on the fender and doors, AND a supercharger.

The power of Rennlist.

PS. The old alternator might just need some fresh brushes and voltage regulator.

1. If the "new" alternator is a rebuilt they are going to charge for giving up the core. Probably $100.

2. Most auto part stores can not check an alternator unless it is mounted on a running vehicle.

Verdad?

1/2 out of two?

Hey, my average is improving. If I can get that up to 1 out of 2 I might start giving repair advise.

If a rebuilt alternator was sold as new for >$400 then somebody ought to be in big trouble.

Only socalgirl could start a simple thread on an alternator replacement and have it go on for 5 pages.

I say if her old alternator tests ok, the shop should reinstall it and they each go their separate ways quietly (no money changes hands, at most she pays labor on removal and reinstall of the good original alternator - would've had to be removed for off-car test anyway). Otherwise, she raises a big stink, i.e., call to BAR, posts the name and phone number of the establishment in question, makes a sign that says, "This shop sucks," and pays a kid $20 to stand out in front for a couple hours......

Really difficult to believe a pro mechanic would say the alternator was bad given the discription of symtoms given here , and points more towards trying to take advantage of someone rather than incompetence.

ok ok I have an update from Mr Guesswork:
I had a power steering leak, which may have contributed to the alternator going bad. he checked everything front to back & said I need a new fuel pump relay. he ordered it for $35.
I asked if I need the alternator & he said it was running below 12 volts.
He is charging me: $449 for the French Alternator, $35 for the relay pump, adn two hours of work...for a total of $723 (plus tax?)
How my loooking guys? Still take it out & run???

Why wouldn't he verify his diagnosis by jumpering the relay before spending your money on one? It sounds like the problem shows up immediately, therefore a relay jump (30 to 87) should make it obvious quickly if that is actually the problem.

Correct when it still stalled he checked what was missing found that the fuel pump was NOT running and managed to figure out that it was a bad RELAY ....Had he done that FIRST you would not be paying for an alternator that you did not need just the RELAY at $35 plus and hour or so of diagnosis. If the alternator was bad your battery would have been running down since that was NOT happening the alternator was not bad. You have been "taken" for $500. Pay the bill and get the old parts from him and go get it tested (written report dated and signed) when it checks O K then go back and get a refund or take him to small claims court.... I think you would WIN easily with that story and the written test report.
