So the Dr says my 84' 928 needs a new alternator...Should be ready for me this weekend...
Since this is my 1st Dr visit, what should this job be costing me?

Doing it yourself or a shop? The alternator is very easy to access/remove, I'd say no more than one hour labor. Most of the expense will be the price of the alternator or rebuild.

I think that's a Rhome or something like that. Perhaps someone will chime in here, but I believe there is a GM retrofit for that alternator that is much more reliable and probably less expensive. Try a search and see, if you are interested in going that route. Dave Anderson may have done this on his '78...
Welcome back. Labor should be between $75 and $100 per hour. The job should not be billed at more than two hours but closer to one hour. I doubt a shop will want to start retrofitting a GM alternator on your Porsche. Most general repair shops are scared of any car with the name Porsche and will shy away from changing anything from stock. A porsche only shop would likely turn it down as well, only on different grounds.
Good luck. If you get to know some of the So Cal 928'ers I'm sure they will help you with this sort of thing in the future.

You really ought to consider doing this yourself, or seeing if you can get together with the gang of 928 owners in SoCal so they can help you. Seems like a waste to pay a shop to do something this easy. These are old cars...it's better to learn on the easy stuff while you can.

An alternator swap is pretty easy, a little dirty, and very satisfying.
since it sounds like the car is already at the shop she may just have to bite the bullet.
In the future there are a lot of helpful people with the tools and the wisdom to assist you in repairing your car, and Im sure many of the wrenches wouldn`t mind to do this, just some food for thought, goodluck on getting your ride back.
I think the 928 community is a pretty cool group of car owners, so thats why we have such big resource of knowledge and tech skills, Good luck to you, Stan

They can pretty much charge you what ever they wish at this point in time. Shops make about as much on the mark up as they do on the labor. Much depends on where they source the parts and California labor is $100-150 per hour depending on the shop.
I would have loved to try it myself...with help from you guys...next issue I will.
they quoted my $460 for the part & approx $160 labor... seems a lil high, but like jim said, looks like I have to bite the bullet this time

Will they let you bring your own parts.
I had a NYC shop install the aftermarket bellypan for the later cars.
They'd rather make money on the labor than not at all.
Never hurts to ask.
JimB or any of the 928 parts specialists can get you the alternator pronto if it's in stock.
