Extreme track car build
I do not know how long this will take or where this journey will end; or if it will! Here are pics of what I am starting with and my grand plan.
86.5 928S 5.0 32v is my track car. My build will be similar to Don Hansons car. If you can believe it; The car was in a salvage yard! Running and driving with a rebuilt trans. Purchased for 1700.00
82 928 bonneville land speed project.
The 86.5 is first and I will work on it as I race it and play with it.
The 82 has no time frame for now.

It's on the list. I am going over to Louis Ott's next week to work on a firm plan. The stroker may wait until the fall or when I find another engine so I don't have much down time.

If you build it similar to the Holbert racer, you will save a lot of time and money!
Just gut it, put a cage in it, safety equip, suspension upgrade, big wheels and tires ( 9.5s and 11" rims) and a set of headers and you are ready to go. Later, if you are still adicted and have developed your skill sets, put the stroker in and buy the next level of performance equipment that can handle the greater HP. (ie brakes, larger front wheels and tires, front fender flares, wings, splitters, trans coolers, oil coolers, all to match the strokers higher performance)

Hey, we know that 86.5! Here's my thread on it last month https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/416637-cheap-86-5-on-sac-craigslist.html
Good luck, you might need it. Keep us up to date with any surprises, and be aware that the transmission is from a 79 and may or may not have been rebuilt properly.

If you're looking to build a clone of Don Hanson's old car, this car would be the cheapest & easiest place to start: http://www.tonygarcia.org/928S4

+1.
May also want to talk to Tom F. He purchased Don's car and also has the old Tilo car. I'm thinking by the end of the year he may want to sell one.
Buying something already started or complete is a better approach.

(Intarweb Disclaimer: the following post is 100% "In My Honest Opinion", and should in no way be confused with factual information.)
Better is in the eye of the builder.
The only major reason, and don't get me wrong this is an incredibly GOOD reason, to buy someone's already-built racecar is Resources.
All resources fall into the two categories of Time and Cost.
Some resources may already be in place (having shop space and tools, experience, etc) but most will certainly require investment ($$$ race parts, all weekends are now booked, etc).
To many people, the building process is as richly rewarding as the driving and racing end of this insane hobby. If a person who feels this way is also willing to invest the Resources, it's on!
I would even go as far to say that a DIY build can even amplify the driving fun by knowing that the finely-tuned monster machine you just set a scorching lap time or huge trap speed with is 100% the result of your blood, sweat, tears, time, and money.

Thanks for the input guys. I bought the car sight unseen and was better than I had expected. It runs very well and had alot of extra parts included. I want to build my own car rather than buy someone elses car and put my name on it. I am a former employee of Boyd Coddington and own my own auto parts manufacturing company so we can make anything we want in house. I also was the chassis builder on Reese Millens pikes peak Nissan Skyline in 2000; so I have the resources to do this car. I didn't want to cut up a car that was even close to being able to be restored.
I got the A/C to work with the addition of a fuse! I will cut the sunroof out of the car including the surrounding sheetmetal for someone who wants to add it to their car.
