Default prnd32 bulb replacement in dash?

how do you get to and change the bulbs in the gear selection lights in the dash in a 85 euro? i do not even see the sockets and i really hope i do not have to remove the printed circuit board. it is not written at all in the work shop manual.

The bulb leads are soldered into the circuit board. IMHO, You need to find someone with surgical soldering skills if you don't have them.

The Nichols tips site has the breakdown:

Good luck!

I found the Radio Shack #7219 to be as bright as the factory bulbs at 60mA, versus the Nichols Tips bulb#, at 25mA.

Sounds as if you have the cluster out already. Now you need to remove the cover and remove the tach.(10 phillip screws for the front clear cover "i think" and 3 or 4 for the tach itself. be careful as there are teeny tiny wires in there. you then need to desolder the one (bulb) to change I have used replacements from radio shack and last time there it seems they have even smaller bulbs now (not LED's) I do not have the number readily available, but just ask and sure they can direct you to correct place. The bulbs I use have very very small wires that you need to get insulation off of. be careful as it is too easy to beak the wire. Next is to solder carefully into place making sure not to let solder flow to other solder joints. Reassemble and try Hope this helps. Don.

Are you sure the bulbs are burnt out?

A failed gear selector indicator switch (located on the thransmission) can often be the root cause for non-illumination of those bulbs.

my 88 928s4 had R, N, and 2 still operational. The others were dead.
I replaced them all. Not complicated, but it is a bit of work. Just be careful with the instrument as the rear foil is very fragile.

If all are out, maybe check the power at the connector in the sparewheel space before taking things apart. There's a plug.

eureka as discussed with the guys at 928 international the lights need volts and on a euro it comes from the little micro switch on the key tumble shaft. 18 dollar 911 igintion buzzer switch lights work perfectly

Translation: The dash indicators rely on power through one of the ignition switch contacts. When that goes south, no power to the trans gear selector switch and theerfore no power to run the dash indicator lights. A new $18 electrical portion of the ignition switch, a part shared with the 911 so cost is somewhat reasonable, cured the problem.

hmmm..never heard of that one. Mine havent worked since i bought the car.

So it may not be a tranny switch then after all?

I guess i can put the motor back in now

Any simple way to walk through a trouble shoot of the switch contacts

Depends on the model year.

Some models the bulb is soldered into the circuit panel.

Later models use bulb holders.

Yes, some folks have replaced them with LEDs. Try a search.
