Are you a member of the Bent Valve club?

Yes, more than once

if so, did you repair it yourself?..hire a shop?

I paid my friend the first time $4000 (PO did the damage this visit), then I got 98 miles out of the car before I pulled a bonehead and toasted 12 or so valves on the right side... Now I'm about to fix it.... I went and bought another 928 in the meantime, so I wouldn't feel suicidal.

How many bent valves? and which ones

see above.

Which engine succumbed?

85 928s 32v....

You can only do so much to avoid it...change the belt and associated parts on schedule, +/- the WP (if the bearing and pulley is firm, I leave it alone), check the tension and tensioner oil and look over the belt and gears once a year or 15K miles, listen closely for any odd bearing and pulley noises every time I start the car. After what happened to John V, I added regular prayer sessions.

Anyone attempted pinning or spot welding the impeller and pulley onto the shaft yet?

Can't someone just forge us a one piece casting that has the pulley, shaft, and impeller all as one unit.

DIY with the encouragement and help of my 928 Buddies, mainly MartinD and Jon928se. The parts were financed by my mum (I was completely broke at the time) and my dad helped fabricate tools.

Rebuild Project Photos

How many bent valves? and which ones

Possibly all of them, I didn't remove them to check, I just replaced the heads with a pair of GT heads - although I returned the cams when we realised they were from a GT. They all contacted the pistons as in the photo, I think they are described as 'tipped'.

87 S4 Manual

Cause of the bent valves?

Ignorance on my part - I entrusted the car to a shop to check the belt when the tension light came on. I'm guessing they just increased the tension, they certainly didn't check the dry tensioner, or the sprockets. A few thousand miles later the worn sprockets sliced through the belt teeth - but at least they stopped the belt tension light coming on!

It's funny how nobody wants to get too detailed, because it's a sore subject.... DOH!

Sometimes you can be lucky/unlucky.

My water pump siezed & milled about 1/4 inch off the side of the belt. The belt did not break, stretch or lose any teeth so still not in the bent valve club; hopefully with my 16V will never be

Are you a member of the Bent Valve club?
Yes, finally. This is my 4th timing belt failure during my 928 ownership tenure, but my first with a euro s. The other motors were US 16 valve cars and no problem.

if so, did you repair it yourself?..hire a shop?
I do everthing except paint myself. Motor was due to come out anyhow due to uneven compression.

How many bent valves? and which ones
It is now a V7 with good compression everywhere except number 5. I am assuming one intake valve.

Which engine succumbed?
Cams, heads, intake runners, etc are all euro S. Block says it is a non-S 4.5, but I don't know for sure. Once I have the heads off I will meausre the bore, of course.

Cause of the bent valves?
Don't know yet. I put a timing belt on when I installed the motor a few 100 miles ago, but did not replace the water pump. After the failure the belt was somewhat slack and both cams were off two teeth (jumped at crank pully, I guess). when I did the rebuild I went through the tensioner and replacesdall the plastic bushings and such, so I am guessing the water pump bearing went. Might have just been the belt streching and needing to be readjusted after a few 100 miles. In anycase I think there is a porkensioner in my future. And a water pump.

Karl....you bent a valve on a 82 model??? I though those were non interference. Your making me nervous because I have an 82 I'm putting a TB and WP on now and up until now thought I didn't have anything to worry about.
