Default Bent Valve Club

Hi all,

I was looking at John Veninger's sig the other day and it noted that he was a member of the "bent valve club". I started thinking about this since I too am a card carrying member of this "exclusive" club. I figure it might be a good data point if all who are members posted....maybe some trends (outside of improper belt maintenance) can be determined???

So...my question is...

Are you a member of the Bent Valve club?

Yes, twice, once before I bought it and once after I owned it for a couple of years

if so, did you repair it yourself?..hire a shop?
First time PO had shop do it ($8000 worth). Second time I did it with help from friends.

How many bent valves? and which ones

First time all 32 were replaced (don't know if all were bent or not). Second time only two intake valves on number 4.

Which engine succumbed?

32 valve 89GT 5.0 liter

Cause of the bent valves?

First time likely lack of Tbelt maintenance. Second time an improperly rebuilt tensioner without oil caused over tension, subsequent wearing of cam gears that cut into edges of belt and teeth stripped at crank gear on startup.

Did it myself and continued with rebuilding the entire engine

How many bent valves? and which ones
8 total. 2 Intake and 6 exhaust (forget which cylinder's intakes were bent but the 6 exhaust valves were in 3 consecutive cylinders i think 1-3 or 2-4, i forget which.

Which engine succumbed?
90 GT engine with 112K miles on it

Cause of the bent valves?
Belt overheated due to a seized water pump which thankfully caused no damage to the block.

Are you a member of the Bent Valve club?

Yes, I joined on August 24, 2004.

Nope. Learned, with help from lots of Rennlist members, to fix it myself. Purchased 2 rebuilt heads, pulled engine and installed them myself.

How many bent valves? and which ones
6, can't remember which ones

Which engine succumbed?

32 valve 85 "S" 5 liter

Cause of the bent valves?
Misaligned belt due to bent tensioner arm shoulder bolt. Belt eroded against timing belt covers to 1/2 its original width, then slipped off one of the cam gears. Uncertain what bent the bolt -- possibly overtightened.

This thread is an omen!
My belt light came on today, I turned around pulled it back in the garage, came in here to the computer and ordered the belt tensioner from Ken...I'm on my way back to the garage to put the car up on stands so I can start tearing into it....

I refuse to join this club without a fight!!

Ryan, Tom, and Malcolm.

I have Ken's tensioner on ALL of my 928s, I will NEVER go back.

IMO this will save the engines, and I have alot of hard miles on a 86 engine, connected to a manual tranny and it has performed flawless.
