my idle is about 500rpm higher than normal , so even a 50% reduction wouldnt be that bad, would it. i mean, heck, the car only needs 10amps to run on the race track, and around 12 or 14 on the street with the stereo on. if it runs ok at 700rpm, if 1200rpm is normal idle and most of the time its running faster, is there a draw back? obviosly, im not doing it for power gains, but for alternator wear. actually, it could help the quick blip throttle response.

OK, then, there are larger alternator pulleys. Stock is about 2". If you went with 3", you probably would need a longer belt, but it would reduce the ratio from 2.5 to 1.67.

Here's a source for 2-7/16" that will fit our alternators.

The alternator shaft size is fairly common, but I can't locate a 3" pulley. You might contact Kenne Belle or Summit Racing. They may have something, although they primarily sell complete underdrive kits. Be sure to check clearance for a larger pulley.

I went to Autozone and bought 52mm preheater hose for a carburator that goes from the bottom of old carburated air-cleaners to the exhaust manifold. It fits great, it slides in the opening at the alternator and slides in the remaining hose opening. You want some air flow not only to cool the alternator but at the front of that hose up in the fender wheel is one of your temperature sensors for your climate control. Ed

52mm fit? Odd, as I find 2.5" (64mm) to be snug. Hmmm... I'll go out and measure the plastic duct on the alternator. I just measured the stock hose and found it to be 2.5"

I went out to look this over. The plastic alternator duct, at least on my 89, is ovoid, about 2.6 inches by 2.1 outside dimensions. The official Porsche hose I have on my car appears to be 60mm (2.34 inch) ID, but the last hose I received from our most trusted 928 vendor was 2.5 inch ID. The original Porsche hose will just slip inside the new hose. However, the new 2.5 inch hose still fits perfectly snug on the duct. On the other end there is a metal band snugging it to the metal section holding the outside temp sensor for the climate control system. I think you can order either 2.5 or 2.25 inch. As reported, someone appears to have fit 52mm hose, which is 2.05 inch. I don't think that would fit very easily on my 2.1 x 2.6 duct.

It may not be Guicci - BUT - I stuck a Delco on the OB and used stainless screen to keep out the small stones - just like we use on boats. I drove through the rain, I heard from a friend that you can drive pretty fast too. I never exceed the limit personally - and 6 inches of water (slowly) in the street today. I'm not to worried about it, the car did fine. In todays world - I buy NEW Delco 110 amp alternators for <$40... You can even set the cars up with 110 SI's (self exciting one wire) for $45. I have two Bosch alternators I rebuilt - sitting in the garage - I don't think they will see the car again
You can buy Delco's at the auto store gauranteed forever for <$50 - there isn't a high mark up on alternators any more!
